Since that time, Plenty of Fish has made plenty of changes. The goal is to get rid of those looking for casual sex and hookups and focus on those looking for a serious relationship.

Plenty of Fish founder Markus Frind sent an email to all subscribers stating the following:

“When I created POF, I wanted it to be all about finding relationships with the right person,” he said. “For the first seven years, this worked really well. I got the site to 10 million users without any employees and POF was generating a ton of relationships.”

“Around three years ago, everyone started using the website via mobile phones. Today, about 70 percent of POF use is via a mobile phone. Unfortunately, about 2 percent of men started to use POF as more of a hookup site, mostly due the casual nature of cell phone use,” he continued. “In sticking with my vision that POF is all about relationships, I’m going to make a bunch of changes to ensure it stays a relationship-focused site.”

With the recent announcement that one-third of marriages are a result of couples meeting online, I believe POF’s decision to say goodbye to those looking to hook up is a wise one.

Here are the changes in a nutshell:

1. Any first contact between users that contains sexual references will not be sent. Anyone who tries to get around this rule will be deleted without warning. This rule has actually been in effect since last month and it’s made the site so much better.
2. You can only contact people +/- 14 years of your age. There is no reason for a 50-year-old man to contact an 18-year-old woman. The majority of messages sent outside those age ranges are all about hookups. Anyone who tries to get around this rule will get deleted.
3. Intimate Encounters will go away in the next few months.

There are 3.3 million people who use the site every day. Of those 3.3 million, there are only 6,041 single women looking for Intimate Encounters. Of those 6,041 women, the ones with hot pictures are mostly men pretending to be women.

Intimate Encounters on POF can be summed up as a bunch of horny men talking to a bunch of horny men pretending to be women.

“POF’s decision to say goodbye to those

looking to hook up is a wise one.”

Frind ended his note by saying, “In short, the vast majority of people will not be impacted. This is because the vast majority of people are not going around spamming women saying, ‘Let’s have sex tonight.’ I can’t change POF alone. I need your help to get the word out there that POF is all about relationships!”

In addition to this, at the top of every email that is received on POF, recipients have the option to report “Click to Flag if Message Has Nude Images.”

While a free site as popular as Plenty of Fish, which ranks number one by Experian/Hitwise for the most visitors in the U.S., attracts a variety of relationship types, Frind has put his digital foot down.

I challenged a friend who bemoaned online dating that if she hadn’t had a date within two months from doing it her way, she would have to join an online dating site.

Two months turned into three, but she finally went online. And then what happened? She’s in a great relationship with the first guy she met and the only moaning she’s doing is the fun kind.

5. You’re nervous about it.

Putting yourself out there takes guts! Being a little nervous as you sign up is par for the course.

Everyone who is dating online is in the same boat as you, so don’t feel like you must have complete confidence going into it.

Pull the trigger. You’re as ready as you’ll ever be.

To make it easier, make a pact to join with a friend. You can check out dates for each other and laugh about shared experiences. (This works best if you don’t share the exact same type or live in the same area. You don’t want to be competing for someone.)

Instead of taking the time to fill out a clever subject line, most men will opt toward leaving this portion of the email blank or simply writing some variation of the word hello.

I used to be one of these guys.

But after long periods of growing more and more successful with this medium of meeting women online, I realized that just like everything else in our online dating lives (the photos, the written profile, etc.), subject lines can and will play a key role toward helping us find success.

When written properly, a great subject line at the top of our emails will accomplish two important tasks:

1. It will ignite curiosity, thus increasing the odds of the email being opened.
2. It will serve as a clever introduction to the bodies of our emails, thus leaving us with a well-rounded and fully developed message.

“When written properly, a great

subject line will ignite curiosity.”

Suppose I use this subject line:

“OK, I have a confession to make…”

This subject line is going to raise a woman’s attention if it is surrounded by 10 other subjects that are either blank or filled with some variation of the word hello.

Women will open the email of the intriguing subject line first. To top it off, she will have that heightened emotional state before even reading the email.

If we follow up this subject line with something in the body that makes a woman laugh or taps into some of the attraction building qualities I often write about, we will have a nice one-two punch in our email.

As long as our photo galleries and written dating profiles are properly constructed, the odds of receiving a response will go up immeasurably.

What would be a good follow-up to this?

Let’s pretend I live by the Jersey Shore, an area full of stereotypes that are perpetuated by the media.

If my subject line is, “OK, I have a confession to make,” I could follow up with:

“So here’s the thing: I know I live in Jersey, but I don’t have orange skin, don’t own any sparkly shirts and have never actually fist pumped other than to mock someone. Is that just way too crazy for a Jersey girl like yourself, or are we going to make this work?”

I will then follow this up with a question that relates to her profile in order to make it clear I am not spamming this line to a hundred other women.

And there you have it. A lesson on how to write subject lines that will enhance your emails dramatically!

The most recent study on Internet dating shows more than one-third of the couples in the U.S. who have tied the knot credit digital love and online dating for bringing them together.

The journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed almost 35 percent of married couples are now meeting online, with 45 percent of those meeting through online dating sites.

eHarmony, known for attracting serious relationships and marriage-minded singles, conducted the study through Harris Interactive.

More than 19,000 people who wed between 2005 and 2012 participated in the study, which takes into account social networks and mobile dating.

So why do you think Prince Charming (or Princess Charming?) will simply come knocking on your door at exactly the moment you’re looking for someone?

It’s true Rome wasn’t built in a day but neither was the process of finding the right partner.

Many people sign up for an online dating site or go to a speed dating event expecting to find their “one and only” simply by signing up or logging in.

Unfortunately, it’s not that easy and it will take some time.

Put some work into it.

As with most things in life that you want badly enough, you’ll have to put some work into it. But don’t worry — all the effort isn’t for naught.

I was on and off JDate for years. It got me a few relationships here and there, but it took a lot of time to meet the right person.

Throughout the process, you learn what you like and what you don’t like.

For example, one short JDate relationship years ago taught me that even if a guy says he’s romantic, it doesn’t mean he necessarily is.

That is, unless you call romantic being in bed at 10 p.m. every night without even making an exception for a casual game of Scrabble. Yes, we broke up over his refusal to stay up “late” to play Scrabble with me, among other things.

I was just so eager to be in a relationship that I overlooked it for a while. And JDate certainly gave me my fair share of awkward yet laughable experiences.

There was the time I went on a date with a guy who said to me, “I have something to tell you.” You just met me – what could you possibly have to tell me?!

He then said, “I think we went on a date six years ago.” Things went downhill from there. I didn’t like him the first time, and I certainly didn’t like him the second!

Give yourself a fair chance.

For the people I give “A Little Nudge” to, I don’t let them quit online dating after just one month. It’s not giving yourself a fair chance.

Even in 2013, people are still warming up to the whole concept of online dating, so maybe they just need time to get acclimated to the scene.

Would you give up a job search after a month if you really needed a job? That’s what I thought.

As Carrie from “Sex and the City” (one of my favorite shows) once said, “People go to casinos for the same reason they go on blind dates — hoping to hit the jackpot. But mostly you just wind up broke or alone in a bar.”

There is an entire section on the classified site devoted to people looking for a human connection — personal ads ranging from missed connections, women for men, men for women, women for women, men for men, strictly platonic, miscellaneous romance and casual encounters.

Like most of the site, the posts are listed chronologically with the newest first.

Unlike most online dating sites, there are no real formats to follow. Write whatever you want, as much or as little as you want. Post a picture if you want.

Searching the ads is just as unstructured. Once you’re in the section that matches your pursuit, the only search forms available are age, keywords or pictures.

It’s hard to believe anyone would use this medium to find love. It seems very archaic, limited and fast moving.

But the down and dirty approach seems to represent Craigslist users to the T.

Who uses the personals section of Craigslist and why?

After posting several ads on the site and personals section itself, I found plenty of people willing to tell me their Craigslist dating stories.

Most of the people who contacted me about their experiences were male.

Themes of “dating” through Craigslist include don’t make expectations and be careful.

Both of these warnings come on either side of the spectrum of what can happen. Some people get sorely disappointed…

The disappointments can include prostitutes, theft, spam, scams and men — lots and lots of men contacting each other (usually unwelcomed).

Others have had (mind) blowing experiences. I was given stories of threesomes involving clipboards with checklists, back-alley blowjobs and a lot, a lot, a lot of hooking up.

One guy told me he met his soul mate on Craigslist and they later used the site to vet for some swinging.

When I asked my sources if anyone actually looked to date through Craigslist, the answer was resoundingly, “No, not really.”

As one guy put it, “It didn’t matter what section I posted in or responded to, the vast majority of women I have met on CL were interested in casual sex. I have concluded that despite what is expressed in the post, CL is nothing more than a booty call site.”

Who are the people using Craigslist?

“CL is for people too bored at work, too stoned at home and too lazy to actually move from their chair to get a date. Bottom-feeders of the online dating world.”

Ouch, does it take one to know one?

Things you’ll need to know if you want to try out Craigslist for yourself:

• There are tons of scams. Take a look at a lot of ads to get a lay of the land before you do any posting or contacting.
• There is a Craigslist culture and language: m4m=men looking for men (w4m=women for men), ts=transsexuals, tv=transvestite, tg=transgender, nsa=no strings attached, bbw=big beautiful woman, fwb=friends with (sexual) benefits, std=sexually transmitted disease, ddf=drugs disease free, 420 friendly= smokes marijuana.
•  Some people write out their phone numbers or emails so bots can’t scan the ads and harass them (i.e. call me at three six five…)
• You will get spammed. Ask for specific things in the email title to know who’s legitimately reading your ad. You’ll see a phrase like, “Message me with your favorite flower in the subject so I know ur real.”
• Pics get more clicks. Although, most pics are not of the person.
• Most ads are sexually charged.
• If you’re a straight man, don’t be surprised if gay men/trannies contact you.
• Do your due diligence to weed through who you’re talking to before going out.
• Leave your credit cards at home.
