Reader Question:

Should I have a first date before Valentine’s Day and then a second date on Valentine’s Day? Or should I wait until Valentine’s Day to set up a first date?

-Derek (California)

Dr. Wendy Walsh’s Answer:

Dear Derek,

Valentine’s Day is kind of a “Hallmark Holiday” where people are pressured to express love. I think it can add a lot of unnecessary pressure to a first date.

I mean, you don’t even know if you truly like the girl, let alone love her. So being out with a bunch of lovebird couples might force you to do the same before you’re ready.

I’d say ignore Valentines Day. If she’s really great, you two can celebrate it next year.
