How Do I Get Him to Pop the Question?

Reader Question:

How do I get him to pop the question?

-Christina (Maryland)

Dr. Wendy Walsh’s Answer:

Newsflash ladies! Women can’t GET a man to do anything. He has to come to that decision by himself. But you can affect the things that help him make the decision.

If you are giving him a maintenance-free relationship complete with sex and playing-house together, he has absolutely no motivation to get married. Figure out what your timeline is. Tell him clearly. Don’t nag.

And if he doesn’t make your deadline, make some bold actions toward slowing down the relationship. Men don’t respond to words as much as they respond to behavior.

Are you brave enough to demand more than a low-criteria relationship?

Can you give some examples of how to do this?

I would recommend mentioning something after a related event occurs around the both of you; after a friend’s wedding, while passing a jewelry store or flipping through photos of a ring magazine and pointing out a few that you like.

Don’t be too pushy and drag him over to watch a wedding-related movie or enjoy a 30 second advertisement about commitment. Remember, you’re only dropping a hint, not a bomb.
