How do I even approach someone in this unique environment?

So there’s this guy who I’ve been interested in getting to know for a long time. I’m in my late 30’s and he’s around 10 years older than me. Dating/approaching men isn’t hard for me in a regular social environment but I’ve been having a hard time getting to know him because I now him through a martial arts gym we both are students at.

Although he’s just a student, he’s one of the higher ranking students so he and the other higher ranking ones are usually asked to guide the lower ranks and new students.

He’s a social guy but he takes martial arts seriously in the helpful sort of way.

We haven’t spoken and I’m not sure how i can just get small talk going in this kind of environment.

    Any ideas?

Casual chit chat after class is ok. It doesn’t have to be in front of everyone. It can just be outside as you leave. Always try and find a gap where you can. Or ask him a question about your class. Slowly build on it. You have nothing to loose.

But how do i start that casual chit chat when we haven’t spoken before. If he’s there he’s either socializing with people he already knows, helping the instructor teach the lower ranking students or what not. I’m new to the martial arts gym.

There is always a first time, you don’t have to be friends already before you start a chit chat with him, after class you can just say “hi, how was class today”? and then you could throw him a compliment.
