Adult Friend Finder: Reviews From the Experts — (Plus 3 Other Options)

Hayley Matthews Hayley Matthews • 3/21/17

In the musical “Avenue Q,” the character Trekkie Monster sings a song called “The Internet is for Porn,” bursting the bubble of his good-natured neighbor Kate Monster, who just wants to teach her kindergarten class how to use the world wide web.

According to Ogi Ogas, co-author of “A Billion Wicked Thoughts: What the Internet Tells Us About Sexual Relationships,” 42,337 sites — or about 4% out of the 1 million that received the most traffic as of 2010 — were sex-related. Ogi also said that 13% of online searches from July 2009 to July 2010 were for erotic content. We’d guess that those numbers have only grown since then.

It appears that Trekkie Monster is right — a lot of people use the internet to find sexy photos, videos, chat rooms, and hookup buddies. One of the first sites in this niche was Adult Friend Finder (AFF), having launched in 1996. So, what are they all about? We’re here to tell you.

Adult Friend Finder: Large User Base But Has Security Problems

First things first, we have to address 2016’s Adult Friend Finder hack when about 340 million accounts were jeopardized, with 15 million of them supposedly having been deleted. The information compromised included usernames, emails, signup and last login dates, and passwords, most of which were being poorly protected or not protected at all.

Adult Friend Finder is extremely popular but has been hacked, so think twice before joining.

During our research on AFF, we also found numerous user reviews that said most of the profiles are inactive, the messages they’d received were spammy, and the site tricked them into being charged. While Adult Friend Finder is clearly one of the largest hookup sites in the dating industry, when you take into consideration all the problems they’ve had, we’d say your chances of remaining anonymous and finding an actual match are pretty slim.

If you find that you still want to try AFF, all you’ll have to do is say whether you’re a single or a couple looking for men or women, and then input your birth date, country, zip code, email, username, and password. Next, finish filling out your profile and start searching for matches at no cost. To access other features, such as messaging, you’ll have to upgrade your account: either one month for $19.95, three months for $59.80 ($19.93 a month), or six months for $179.10 ($14.93 a month).

3 Other Adult Dating Site Options

Adult Friend Finder has been around for over 20 years, which feels like a lifetime on the internet, so they’re definitely one of the most established dating brands around. However, if you’re still on the fence, we have three alternative sites for finding frisky singles that might work for you.

Relationships: Hookups, Chats

Match System: Search by interest, zip code, photos, more

Our Experts Say: BeNaughty is a popular "hookup" site that drops all the pretenses of dating and just gets down to the nitty-gritty of hooking up. The best part: browse profiles in any town for free. Full Review »

BeNaughty is pretty straightforward — this is where horny singles come to be naughty without any judgment. While AFF has been surrounded by news of hacks and fake profiles, BeNaughty hasn’t, which makes it a safer option in our opinion. Mainly because the site uses SSL encryption technology to make sure your personal information stays private and verifies every member either via text or phone call.

Relationships: Casual Dates, Deep Relationships

Match System: Search, plus daily match suggestions

Our Experts Say: Zoosk's integration with social networks and its popular smartphone app make it one of the web's fastest-growing dating sites for casual and serious daters. Full Review »

Zoosk isn’t exclusive a hookup site, but it has so many members (over 38 million, to be exact), that you shouldn’t have any trouble finding someone who’s got the same adult activities on their mind. Zoosk is also similar to other hookup-based apps, like Tinder, because its Carousel is a way to quickly look through potential matches and give them a yes, no, or maybe.

Relationships: Casual Dates, Deep Relationships

Match System: Search by age, profile, zip, more

Our Experts Say: has led to more dates, marriages and relationships than any other site. Its impressive user base and success rate make it our top review. Full Review »

We realize that Match doesn’t exactly have a reputation for finding casual sexual encounters. However, since it’s free, it’s worth including in your online dating arsenal. Just make sure you’re as specific about your wants and needs in your profile and searches as you can.

Adult Friend Finder: Proceed With Caution or Make Another Choice

If you’re like Trekkie Monster and are surfing the web for someone who’s just as into frisky fun as you, Adult Friend Finder is a name you’ll hear often. While the site was hacked several months ago and they’ve added more security features since then, remember to keep your guard up if you do decide to sign up. And if you’re looking for other options, we’ve given you our three favorites. Good luck!
