This is an exclusive study conducted by DatingAdvice.com, which surveyed respondents over the course of three weeks to reflect an accurate representation of the U.S. population.
Previous research has shown 46 percent of men and 23 percent of women have had sex on a first date, but a new study has found 26 percent of those encounters may have turned into something more.
Conducted by DatingAdvice.com, the study revealed more than a quarter of Americans wound up in a relationship after having sex on a first date.
Among the most likely groups to report a relationship from a first-date hookup was gay respondents, who were twice as likely as straight men and women.
One in three men said a sexual encounter on a first date led to a relationship, compared to about one in five women.
“Gay respondents were twice as likely to
report a relationship from a first-date hookup.”
The results also show marital status, age and race may have a big influence.
Thirty-four percent of those aged 45 to 54 answered in the affirmative, while just 15 percent of 18- to 24-year-old respondents did so.
Divorced Americans were 15 percent more likely than single respondents to have been in a relationship as a result of first-date sex.
Roughly one-third of Caucasions, Hispanics and African-Americans indicated dating someone after having sex on the first date, but Asian men and women were found to be one of the least likely groups at 18 percent.
The study surveyed 1,080 respondents over the course of three weeks, balancing responses by age, gender, income, race, sexuality and other factors in order to accurately represent the U.S. population. The study has a margin of error of +/- 2.8%.
