This is an exclusive study conducted by DatingAdvice.com, which surveyed respondents over the course of three weeks to reflect an accurate representation of the U.S. population.
Ryan Lochte has been quoted as saying he’s never had a one-night stand, and it looks like he’s not alone. Did you know a majority of Americans say they’ve never taken part in one?
That’s the main finding in a new DatingAdvice.com study, where we explored which Americans were not open to this type of casual sex.
In all, 53 percent indicated never having tried it. Women and younger Americans were among the most likely groups to have never done so.
Women had a 56 percent higher likelihood of never being in a one-nighter than men, while Americans aged 18 to 24 had a 25 percent higher likelihood than those aged 25 to 34.
Those who are married also had some of the highest responses. Slightly more than one in five married respondents answered no to the question, “Have you personally ever had a one-night stand?” and four in 10 divorcees answered no to the same question.
“Fifty-three percent of Americans
have never been in a one-night stand.”
Among the least likely groups to answer in the negative was gay men and lesbian women and African-Americans.
At 54 percent and 32 percent, respectively, straight respondents were almost twice as likely to have not participated in a single night of passion than homosexual respondents.
In terms of race, African-American men and women had a 64 percent lower likelihood of not being a part of a one-night stand than Asian-American men and women.
High-wage earners also had some of the lowest responses – 51 percent of those earning between $100,000 and $124,999 annually compared to 56 percent of those making less than $25,000 a year.
The results also show Southern tradition could play a factor, as 54 percent of respondents living in states like Kentucky and North Carolina said they have never partaken in a one-night stand, but only 50 percent of respondents living in states like Rhode Island and Maine have not.
The study surveyed 1,080 respondents over the course of three weeks, balancing responses by age, gender, income, race, sexuality and other factors in order to accurately represent the U.S. population. The study has a margin of error of +/- 2.8%.
