How We Help:CAWS North Dakota is a dual coalition of 20 member crisis intervention centers. These nonprofit entities provide 24-hour crisis intervention, advocacy, protective housing, referrals, and peer support.
History:
The North Dakota Council on Abused Women’s Services (NDCAWS) began 1978 as an informal group of five crisis intervention ce ...nters organized across the state of North Dakota to provide shelter and advocacy to battered women – very similar to how the battered women’s movement began across the country. The year 1979 was critical, solidifying a statewide coalition through the passage of the state’s first domestic violence protection order statute. In June of 1980, the coalition was incorporated in the State of North Dakota. In 1981, a director was hired through the federal Law Enforcement Assistance Administration grant. The work of these pioneering women is represented in our logo today by purple petals. The ODVN advances the principles that all people have the right to an oppression and violence free life; fosters changes in our economic, social and political systems; and brings leadership, expertise and best practices to community programs. ODVN's structure reflects its philosophy and commitment to collective decision-making and egalitarian relations. The Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (OCADVSA) is the membership organization of Oklahoma’s ...domestic violence and sexual assault service providers, consisting of 28 Attorney General certified agencies and 3 tribal programs. At a meeting in April 1979, cemented the formation of the Oklahoma Coalition on Domestic Violence, and the first shelter for battered women opened on March 5, 1979, in Enid, Oklahoma. Oklahoma Coalition on Domestic Violence was incorporated on July 17, 1981. In the 1990’s the name changed to the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. OCADVSA is a federally funded state coalition. We are dedicated to the elimination of domestic & sexual violence and stalking in Oklahoma and Indian Country. As the Women’s Movement grew and flourished during the ‘70’s, the National YWCA charged its state affiliates with condu ...cting a needs assessment of women and girls. Following a series of meetings attended by YWCA members and other activists from all over Ohio, it was decided to form an independent organization, known as Action-For Battered Women in Ohio Coalition. Early activities included speaking engagements, media appearances, workshops and conferences about battered women. During those years members became involved with making legislative changes, at both the state and federal levels. How We Help:A private, nonprofit membership organization, PCADV is dedicated to ending domestic violence and helping battered women and their children re-establish physical, social, and economic dignity. PCADV ensures the availability of effective and appropriate services to victims through training, program development, and monitoring of programs for compliance with federal and state requirements as well as the Coalition's comprehensive program standards.
History:
Since 1976, PCADV's statewide network has grown from nine to 60 community-based domestic violence programs that offer a lifel ...ine to safety in every county of the Commonwealth without regard to age, sex, race, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation/identity, or economic status.
These programs serve nearly 100,000 victims of domestic violence each year - more than 2.5 million since 1976 - through intervention services that are provided free of charge and include 24 hour hotlines, crisis centers, individual and group counseling/support, shelter, assistance in filing PFA petitions, court accompaniment, children's programs, and referrals to other community resources.
PCADV also works to eliminate the crime of domestic violence through public education and school-based programs as well as training and technical assistance to organizations, communities, and policy-makers.
PCADV advocates on behalf of battered women through the promotion of public policies and the development of legislation that strengthens their legal protections.Read More »
