History:
In 1994, The Body Shop launched a ground-breaking campaign in Canada. In that first year of campaigning The Body Shop raised ...$155,000 for violence prevention and recovery programmes and received the Grand Award from the United Nations for addressing this important issue. Soon to follow in Canada's footsteps were The Body Shop in Malaysia, the Philippines and the United States. These pioneers inspired the launch of the global Stop Violence in the Home campaign in 2003.
By 2006 the campaign had reached 47 markets across the world. In 2008, Stop Violence in the Home will run in 56 markets. Since the first campaign was launched, more than £2.6 million has been raised. These funds are vital in the fight to stop domestic violence, but fundraising is only half the story of what our campaign has achieved. How We Help:The Equal Justice Foundation provides information on how men and women may deal with family violence or abuse and where they may turn for help. We have helped thousands of men and women individually in most states and several other countries. Our websites, ejfi.org and dvmen.org, receive 1.5 million hits a year from about 18,000 visitors. Often the personal stories of those who have sought help from us are used, with their permission, to illustrate the problems and provide guidance to those with similar issues.

How We Help:We believe that access to justice is fundamental to strong, safe communities. Our lawyers, paralegals, and support staff are dedicated to providing free civil legal services to qualified and low-income residents and nonprofits throughout the Tampa Bay area. Last year, we helped and educated more than 19,000 individuals, families, and community groups.
History:
In 1967, Bay Area Legal Services opened its doors to provide free legal services to low-income Tampa residents. We began wit ...h a staff of four attorneys in a neighborhood storefront office, working on a shoe-string budget. Today BALS is a nonprofit, public interest law firm with more than 100 attorneys, paralegals, and support staff, operating on a seven million dollar budget, with offices located throughout the Tampa Bay area. Annually we provide legal services and information to more than 19,000 individuals, families, and community groups. Through offices in Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties and the Legal Aid Line, we provide a full range of civil legal services to our clients.
In 2002, BALS increased access to services by establishing the Legal Aid Line, our centralized telephone intake unit. Legal Aid Line staff provide eligibility screening and legal advice over the telephone. With this additional method of providing services, we have enhanced our partnerships with other legal aid organizations and expanded our service area to include low-income residents of Manatee and Sarasota counties. In 2014 BALS responded to 58,199 callers seeking legal help.
Over the years, BALS has established a number of special programs to address specific legal needs in the community, including the Legal Information Center and the Family Forms Clinic at the George Edgecomb Courthouse to provide services to pro se litigants; the L. David Shear Children’s Law Center to help children in foster care; and offices at The Spring of Tampa Bay to assist victims of domestic violence. We also assist nonprofits and community groups through the Judge Don Castor Community Law Center.
For more than 32 years, BALS has worked with hundreds of volunteer attorneys who have donated their time to provide advice, assistance, and representation to indigent residents by participating in pro bono projects organized and coordinated by our Bay Area Volunteer Lawyers Program (BAVLP).
Throughout our history, BALS has identified areas of legal need and developed responses and solutions. For more than 10 years the Family of Men has operated a telephone crisis line.The daily averages of callers are 2 per day. Of ... the 1200 callers per year (2001) 22% are from women. Of the 22% women callers approximately 25% are from mothers who’s sons are in a violent domestic situation and they are concerned not only for their son’s safety but also the safety of their grandchildren. An additional 25% are from, what I call the 2nd wives club, women who are married to a man with a vindictive 1st wife and their life is in total distress due to the situation. History:
Petra Luna was an abuse victim her whole young life; sexually, emotionally, physically and by school bullying. Later, she lik ...e many others took the normal course of ending up in abusive relationships with her male partners. Fortunately, through extensive therapy, artistic expression and advocacy she overcame the crippling effects of her past and began her journey to help others who had been abused. After a few years of working with other nonprofits, Petra founded her own organization in 2008 she named the P. Luna Foundation. She has gained over 100,000 followers worldwide through social networking and her music and charity web sites receive over one million hits per year. “In 2006 when I was working for Domestic Violence in Los Angeles, I met Ken Austin, a retired basketball player for the Detroit Pistons who was also working in the cause. He told me in a meeting once that if I really wanted to help abuse victims, I had to deal with the male perpetrators of Domestic Violence. This made me very angry and I never forgot it. As I matured in the cause and found my voice in the fight against child abuse, I came to the revelation that Ken was right all along. If I really wanted to help victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence in addition to other issues like suicide prevention, drug & sex addition, etc., I had to help young men who were abused as children to lower their risks of going down destructive paths which hurt themselves and others. With time and after witnessing the effects of abuse on my brothers, cousins and my male friends, all that Ken said started to make sense. How We Help:Men Stopping Violence is a national training institute that provides organizations, communities and individuals with the knowledge and tools required to mobilize men to prevent violence against women and girls.
History:
In 1981, Atlanta therapists Dick Bathrick, M.A., and Gus Kaufman, Jr., Ph.D., each with a history of involvement in progressi ...ve social change work, began Atlanta’s first program for batterers. Kathleen Carlin, who was then executive director of the Cobb County YWCA Women’s Resource Center, hired them to run a group under her supervision. The structure for the classes that they created proved extremely challenging. It was unheard of for men to talk together about the ways they view and treat women, knowing that their discussions would be taped, listened to and commented on by women. As difficult as it was, Kathleen, Dick and Gus continued to hold open classes and learned that men were more likely to change when they were continually reminded of the impact of their actions on the women in their lives.
1982: Within one year, the classes and community education work had grown and it was time to form an organization whose mission was to engage men in ending male violence against women. Men Stopping Violence (MSV) was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization with a small, very dedicated board of directors whose first president was Congressman John Lewis. To meet the need to keep women’s reality central to the work, Kathleen Carlin left the YWCA shelter to become the founding executive director of MSV.
1994: While MSV continued its work with batterers, the organization also pursued opportunities to create systems change. The 12 years of work did not change Kathleen, Gus and Dick’s commitment to social change. In fact, they became more convinced that social change was the key to preventing violence against women. A significant new work area was added in 1994 when MSV won one of four national cooperative agreement awards with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct research into effective community intervention to end battering.
1996: MSV and women’s advocates across the country were devastated when Kathleen was diagnosed with lung cancer, and passed away after a six-month battle with the disease. A planning committee was appointed from MSV board members and staff, women’s advocate consultants, and the community at-large to design and recommend an organizational structure that would meet the growing philosophical and programmatic needs. The results of this in-depth process were a new team structure; the naming of Ulester Douglas and Dick Bathrick as co-executive directors; the creation of a two-woman consultancy to the organization; and a new by-law requiring that women constitute a majority on the board of directors. This structure remained in place from 1998-2003, and in 2004 Shelley Serdahely became the executive director.
Today MSV continues to evolve through a continual process of examining internal lessons and external demands. However, MSV’s vision of safety for women remains constant, and the long-term commitment to social justice and systems change work is firm. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) awarded MSV $500,000 in October 2009 to organize and manage the first national initiative to engage men and youth in the work of addressing violence against women.Read More »
How We Help:The Men's Resource Center for Change is to support men in developing healthy self-awareness and meaningful personal relationships with women, children and other men that move beyond the limits of masculine stereotypes and social patterns that have divided men historically.
History:
The roots of the Men's Resource Center for Change go back over 30 years. In 1981 the National Conference on Men and Masculini ...ty's seventh gathering was held at Tufts University. Several men who attended were moved by the ideas they heard about redefining male roles in healthier, non-violent directions. They returned home inspired to create an anti-sexist men's network.
Recognizing that many men were keenly interested in putting old stereotypes of masculinity to rest, in 1982 these men founded what was originally called the Men's Resource Connection (MRC). A grassroots organization, the MRC was committed to developing a strong local network among men, and between men and women. Soon the men began taking their hopes and visions into the community. In 1983, the MRC sponsored the Northeast Regional Men's Conference at Hampshire College, and soon after began publishing a men's newsletter which has evolved into Voice Male, a magazine which had a print run of 10,000 distributed throughout our region and mailed to subscribers across North American and overseas.
Over the years, the MRC has offered classes, workshops, consultations, and trainings at schools, colleges, and universities, and for agencies and organizations across the Northeast and beyond. Among its other public activities have been a statewide fathers' conference, newspaper signature ad campaigns, the "Challenge and Change" annual awards banquet, and a four-day Men's Walk to End Abuse, which was initiated in October 2003.
In 1988, the MRC incorporated as a non-profit organization and began offering an array of programs, projects, and services. The domestic abuse program, then called Men Overcoming Violence (MOVE) began in 1989; it was among the first programs to be certified when the state began doing so in 1991. Now called Moving Forward, the program also includes anger management classes, Conscious Communication workshops, and youth violence prevention services. The Youth Programs began in 1990 as the High School Education Project; both the Support Groups and Fathering programs started in 1993 (and then merged). Through these activities thousands of men, women, and young people have been affected by the MRC's message.
The Men's Resource Connection officially changed its name to the Men's Resource Center of Western Massachusetts in 1993. In 1996, the MRC inaugurated an awards celebration, each year honoring community members whose lives and work reflect a new vision of masculinity, leadership, and social change. In 1998, the MRC conducted an intensive training for a group in the Southwest which resulted in the creation of the independent Men's Resource Center of Northern New Mexico. Later that year, the organization purchased a building in downtown Amherst to house its administrative offices and many of its programs. In 1999, the MRC expanded its weekly support group program to Northampton and opened an office in the city of Springfield. The MOVE program began operating groups in our Springfield office, plus groups in Greenfield and Athol to the north, and Belchertown to the east, and the support programs offer open drop-in support groups in Amherst, Northampton, and Greenfield; a group for male survivors of childhood abuse and neglect in Amherst; and a group in Amherst for gay, bisexual, and questioning men.
In October 2003, the MRC officially went international, with a 12-day training visit to Japan in which we talked about the MRC's approach to stopping domestic violence. For many years, though, the MRC had hosted numerous visitors from many countries, including Sweden, Norway, South Africa, and the former Soviet Republic of Kyrgyzstan.
In May 2005, in recognition of the fact that our voice extends well beyond western Massachusetts, the MRC changed its name to the Men's Resource Center for Change.Read More »

We are committed to helping the church equip God’s people to love and care for each other in the same spirit that Christ loves and cares for us. We recognize Christian counseling as a unique and case-based form of Christian discipleship, assisting the church in its call to bring believers to maturity in the lifelong process of sanctification- of growing to maturity in Christ.
We recognize that some are gifted to do so in the context of a clinical, professional and/or pastoral manner. We also believe that selected lay people are gifted to care for others and that they need the appropriate training and mentoring to do so. We believe that the ‘seat’ of helping ministry in the church is supported—must be supported—by three strong legs. These legs are the pastor, the lay helper, and the clinical professional, and it is to these three roles that AACC is dedicated to serve.
