How We Help:ANDVSA serves as a resource for our member organizations by providing training, technical assistance, statewide planning and needs assessment, community education, and gathering and disseminating resources and information critical to our work.
History:
The Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (ANDVSA) is a dual coalition that was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) ...in 1980 to strengthen the support systems serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence by facilitating networking among member programs while advocating for social and systems change in Alaska. ANDVSA is the only statewide organization providing training and technical assistance to the array of service providers that directly address domestic, sexual and dating violence in the state. At that time, there were five programs in the state providing services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. However, the programs were not coordinated, the issues were not significantly recognized, there was little funding available, and legislation to address the problem was negligible. Currently, there are eighteen programs who are ANDVSA members and four affiliate members, a state agency committed to the elimination of violence , funding continues to be appropriated, and the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault are recognized as serious statewide concerns requiring the sustained action.Read More »

California Coalition Against Sexual Assault
Domestic Violence Resource
How We Help:The California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) provides leadership, vision and resources to rape crisis centers, individuals and other entities committed to ending sexual violence.
History:
The California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) began as a grassroots movement. Founded on May 10, 1980, by Marilyn ... Peterson at a meeting, the organization initially consisted of regional/caucus members and a volunteer Board of Directors. These hard-working individuals were driven by the need in California for a collective voice on a state and national level, in addition to programming direction for rape crisis centers. CALCASA launched its first media campaign, “This is Not an Invitation to Rape Me” in 1997. The provocative campaign drew attention to the stereotypes and myths surrounding sexual assault. In order to fulfill the mission to end sexual violence, CALCASA recognizes that in addition to responding to the needs of those who have be sexually assaulted, efforts must be made to prevent sexual violence from occurring in the first place. Accordingly, CALCASA considers prevention an essential element of its activities.Read More »

The Clark County Prosecuting Attorney
Domestic Violence Resource
How We Help:"The Prosecutor is a servant of the people and the government. He is an advocate for both. He must be vigilant in the quest to seek out and convict the guilty, but must also ensure that the innocent are not wrongly convicted or oppressed. He must strive to preserve the public welfare and safety of all citizens. He must always seek justice."
History:
The prosecution of domestic violence is among the highest priorities of the Office of the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney.< ...br />
The unique dynamics of domestic violence create inherent problems in the criminal justice system. Over the length of an intimate and abusive relationship, victims of domestic violence are constantly told the abuse is their fault. They will feel guilt for summoning aid from police, and feel responsible for the sanctions imposed by the criminal justice system. Because they often live in a world dominated by psychological terror, they will be very reluctant to "cooperate" with authorities. This is especially true if the system offers them no assistance, no protection, and no relief. Society often perpetuates the myths that domestic violence is the fault of the woman, who only had to leave to solve the problem. Police, Prosecutors, Probation Officers, and Judges have to be better educated in order to effectively deal with the problem.
Intervention systems must not overlook the children, who are themselves victims. The cycle of violence will continue from generation to generation. Children who witness domestic violence in the home are many times more likely to be abusive adults. This is a cost our society cannot afford to pay.
It is impossible to expect the victim of domestic violence to negotiate the complex maze of the legal system without help. Victim advocates who are knowledgeable about the legal system, and who understand the dynamics of domestic violence, must be available to give assistance. Through the Victim Assistance Program and the Domestic Violence Unit of the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney, help and information is available. An effective coordinated response to domestic violence is essential. Only with the aid of these dedicated professionals can true justice and healing be accomplished. We are proud to assist in making these important services available to the citizens of Clark County.
Domestic violence occurs among all kinds of people. It cuts across cultural, economic and social boundaries. It can involve the person you've worked with for 10 years, your best friend who married her childhood sweetheart, your teenage daughter who just met someone new and exciting, or your next-door neighbor. Together, we can prevent domestic violence. We must work together towards the common goal of insuring the safety of victims, and holding offenders accountable and responsible for their behavior. We must learn to take action. Read More »
