The Short Version: Galaxy Cantina & Grill is a popular taco restaurant with a chef-driven menu and craft tequila cocktails. The fresh-made masa tortillas are a testament to the kitchen’s dedication to freshness and quality, and the fried churros make for an indulgent dessert. La Jolla foodies, beach goers, and dating couples hankering for delicious Mexican cuisine frequently head to Galaxy Cantina & Grill, and they aren’t disappointed.

Galaxy Owner and Executive Trey Foshee was born in Hawaii and raised in Ojai, California, where he cultivated an appreciation for good food made fresh. A family friend hired him as a busboy at The Ranch House, and his culinary ambitions began to grow. He spent two years in Maui, surfing by day and working in the kitchen by night.

He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York at age 19, and then he gained experience working at top-tier restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Acclaimed Chef Trey Foshee opened Galaxy Cantina & Grill in 2015.

In 1997, Robert Redford called Trey and asked him to be the executive chef at the Sundance Resort in Utah. Of course, Trey jumped at the opportunity to show his skills. A year later, Food and Wine magazine named Trey among the top 10 chefs in the U.S.

Fast forward to 2015 when Trey returned to his roots in California and launched Galaxy Cantina & Grill to promote fresh, sustainable Mexican food.

The 4,200-square-foot taco restaurant is located in the old La Jolla Shores Market in the Kellogg Building, and it’s within walking distance of San Diego’s most popular beaches. The location is great for attracting customers, and it means Trey can still surf the waves when he’s not innovating taco recipes alongside Head Chef Christine Rivera.

Galaxy Cantina & Grill is a laid-back taco joint that’s become famous for its tequila and mezcal cocktails, house-ground masa tacos, and wood-grilled meats. The kitchen pays homage to traditional Mexican cuisine and invites locals and visitors to satisfy their taco cravings in a fun, friendly atmosphere.

To quote the restaurant’s website, “Every bite should be the best bite and today deserves to be toasted with only the most delicious of cocktails. So bienvenido! Explore our menus, try a few things, but most of all, have an awesome time.”

Fresh Ingredients, Bold Flavors & Daily Drink Specials

Galaxy Cantina & Grill sets a high bar when it comes to Mexican food. It starts with fresh landrace corn sourced from Oaxaca, Mexico. The corn is cooked, grinded, and prepared in house into tortilla dough or masa. No wheat products are used in this process, so all the tortillas are gluten-free. Customers can ask to take some masa home if they like.

The Galaxy menu offers gourmet tacos made to order. A lot of work goes into every component in these dishes, and that means quality in every bite.

“We are in the business of making delicious food,” the team asserted. “Only the freshest ingredients, skillfully composed, make it to the table. Our libations are a cut above, and there’s no shortage on variety. If you’re drinking with us, expect something delicious and refreshing.”

The Sunday brunch menu has even more tasty treats, including breakfast tacos and tres leches French toast. The brunch happy hour offers bottomless mimosas and micheladas (a Mexican drink made with beer, lime juice, tomato juice, and chile peppers). A lot of people show up to Galaxy Cantina & Grill to fuel up for a day at the beach or on the water. Meals can also be ordered to-go if you have a picnic date in mind.

Taco lovers can explore different flavors, including grilled avocado or Baja fried fish.

In addition to its famed tacos, the Galaxy kitchen gets people’s mouths watering with its rice bowls, quesadillas, enchilada fries, and wood-grilled trout. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the grilled octopus tostada or duck legs with mole sauce.

And don’t forget to save room for dessert. The hot, sugary churros served with ice cream and Mexican chocolate sauce can be a great way to top off a date night.

When it comes to alcoholic beverages, Galaxy Cantina & Grill has a varied selection of tequilas, mezcals, and other spirits. The mixologists offer monthly cocktail specials that feature top-shelf bottles. The bar’s happy hour runs from Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. The daily deals include $5 Modelo draft beer and $7 classic margaritas.

Serving Tacos for Wedding Parties & Important Events

Over the years, Galaxy Cantina & Grill has hosted countless first dates, birthday dinners, and special celebrations. Many people show up here to treat themselves to gourmet tacos and tequila cocktails, and sometimes they end up making lifelong memories with their loved ones.

“This isn’t just another taco shop,” said Roger W. in a Yelp review. “Will be taking my wife there on our anniversary. [We will] snorkel with the leopard sharks, surf, [have] cocktails… then a walk on the beach and Galaxy’s tacos. She’ll be stoked!”
