The Short Version: Since opening its doors in 1997, SweetWater Brewing Company has become a go-to date destination for beer lovers and foodies throughout Atlanta, Georgia. The brewery’s spacious taproom, delectable beers, and friendly vibes can put singles and couples at ease, encouraging them to strike up a conversation about the beers they enjoy the most. With its dynamic events and seasonal menus, SweetWater has inspired crowds of fun-loving folks to come together and celebrate the simple joys in life.
Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney have been friends since college, and beer was an important part of their youthful adventures at the University of Colorado in Boulder. They enjoyed drinking beer so much that they found work cleaning kegs at a local brewery. That’s when they began to learn their craft and get serious about entering the beer business.
The two friends parted ways after graduation — Kevin began tending bar at breweries throughout Colorado, while Freddy went to California to study under the American Brewers Guild — yet they stayed in touch through the years.
Then, during the 1996 Summer Olympics, Freddy decided he wanted to bring Atlanta a taste of the West Coast’s breweries, and he invited his old beer-loving pal Kevin to join him. Freddy named the brewery SweetWater after his favorite kayaking creek in Atlanta. The rest is history.
Today, SweetWater Brewing Company’s official motto is “Don’t float the mainstream,” and the brewers encourage people to have a good time doing their own thing.
SweetWater’s menu features many delectable beers that can give daters something to talk about and savor together. This casual date destination is full of entertainment, laughter, and merriment, so it’s worth stopping by with that special someone and toasting to your relationship here.
“Located in Midtown Atlanta, SweetWater Brewing Co. has become a Georgia staple for their craft brews and exceptional atmosphere,” said a spokesperson for the SweetWater team.
SweetWater’s award-winning beer menu has a little something for everyone. It keeps 24 brews on tap and has been recognized as one of the best local brewers in Atlanta. From Wednesday to Sunday, the SweetWater Brewing Co. pours delicious IPAs, ales, ciders, and other special brews. Some are tropical, some are hoppy, and all of them are packed with original flavors.
The 420 Extra Pale Ale is one of SweetWater’s most popular brews. Its flavor profile is herbal and floral with a hoppy character and a crisp finish. It was originally concocted on 4/20, and the pale ale has been satisfying cravings ever since.
SweetWater’s Blue, which is available all year round, is bursting with blueberry flavor, and the brewers recommend pairing it with pancakes for the ultimate tasty experience.
In addition to its age-old favorites, SweetWater likes to mix things up by putting experimental and eyebrow-raising brews on tap. Its seasonal offerings include the Dank Tank series, limited batches from The Hatchery pilot system, and barrel-aged beers in The Woodlands Project series.
The SweetWater brewery has won over many locals with its unique brews, and now it is tackling the foodie scene by opening a kitchen in the SweetWater Taproom.
Now the SweetWater Taproom whips up elevated bar food, including caramel corn, corn dogs, and chicken tamales. Its savory fare is great for a light lunch or late-night snack, and couples can end their dates on a sweet note by splitting a SweetWater Blue blueberry milkshake.
As SweetWater’s spokesperson said, “With a new full-service restaurant in the taproom and a newly renovated outside patio that features frequent live music from local artists, the brewery is the perfect fun, casual date spot for couples.”
“My husband and I have had SweetWater on our bucket list for years,” said a Georgia resident on TripAdvisor. “Today, we finally made it! We knew we’d enjoy the beer, but we were also pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere, and most definitely the food.”
In 2014, SweetWater Brewing Company decided to celebrate April 20th in style and throw a beer-centric party known as SweetWater 420 Fest. The annual event has become a beloved tradition in downtown Atlanta.
Every year, over 50,000 people descend upon Centennial Olympic Park to enjoy three days of rocking music, cold beer, and chill vibes. Past headliners include Widespread Panic, Ween, The Floozies, and other class acts. The festival’s events also include a 5k marathon, an artist market, and a food truck rally — and, of course, plenty of craft beer.
This dynamic event is popular among beer-loving couples and friends, and it’s a great opportunity to party all weekend long. You can buy a general admission 3-day pass to get access to the festival, including the three stages featuring 30+ bands. VIP tickets include access to a lounge area, private restrooms, a gaming area, and full cash bar.
Many locals look forward to the 420 Fest, but it’s not the only fun event organized and promoted by SweetWater Brewing Company.
SweetWater keeps the fun going all year round by encouraging live bands to play for guests in the evening. From bluegrass to reggae music, the brewery sees all kinds of talented acts entertaining the crowd. You can look on the SweetWater calendar to find out about upcoming performances and events.
SweetWater can also host and cater private events — anything from a company party to a rehearsal dinner — and take visitors on an expert-led tour of the brewery. The tour only costs $8 and includes 15 ounces of fresh-brewed samples, so it’s an affordable and fun date activity for couples hanging out in Atlanta.
“So cool and informative,” said a TripAdvisor user who traveled from Orlando, Florida, to tour SweetWater. “The drink samples were a nice touch, and the tap room was amazing.”
Freddy and Kevin went from drinking buddies to brewery owners because they love beer, and they love seeing people having fun. They opened SweetWater Brewing Company to give Atlanta residents and visitors a place where they could have a flavorful adventure and relax with friends, family members, and dates. Today, it is the 15th largest brewery in the U.S. in terms of volume.
Day in and day out, SweetWater Brewing delights the taste buds with its beers and bar food, and it offers brewery tours, live music, and community events to further entertain local beer lovers. Anyone over 21 can stop by SweetWater to have a beer while surrounded by friendly faces and romantic opportunities.
The SweetWater spokesperson assured us, “Whether you’re spending a Friday evening out or enjoying a Sunday fun-day afternoon, your date will be a refreshing change from the average candle-lit dinner.”
