Manhattan’s Mr. Purple bar and restaurant is at the pinnacle of style with an energetic atmosphere that attracts creative people from all around the Lower East Side. The bar isn’t just on top of the latest trends, it’s also situated atop the Hotel Indigo, a space it has inhabited since 2015.
A quick search for #MrPurple on Instagram returns nearly 20,000 results, most of which show Mr. Purple patrons enjoying the sweeping views of the New York City skyline. People also flock to the hotspot for its rooftop pool and some of the best cocktails in Manhattan.
There’s no dance floor, and reviewers are often pleasantly surprised by the bar’s lack of pretense. It’s a relaxing place to spend an evening in New York City, especially with a special someone.
“You likely have a friend from another city who has heard of — or visited — Mr. Purple said Caitlin Hermann, Marketing Manager for the Gerber Group, which owns Mr. Purple. “We want our guests to create memories with their friends, enjoy the views, cocktails and experience great service so they keep coming back.”
The bar offers plenty of space for big groups, as well as out-of-the-way nooks for couples looking for a more private date. Couches line the perimeter of the rooftop space, with rows of tables positioned under wooden rafters and exposed industrial pipes.
It’s ideal in the summer when the party can comfortably spill out onto the bar’s 6,000-square-foot rooftop space. Seats by the swimming pool invite couples to share an intimate moment — or even a dip.
For an exclusive experience at Mr. Purple, couples can book a spot in the Veuve Clicquot Chalet. The wintry, ski-lodge pop-up has white, furry ottomans and wooden chairs and couches where visitors can sit under a warm glass dome that overlooks the city. The limited-time event is sure to impress a date, and reservations last a maximum of two hours and require a food and beverage order of at least $100 per person.
Mr. Purple’s veteran bartenders serve up an extensive list of cocktails — both traditional and innovative. For a new classic, patrons can order the Mr. Purple, which has Casamigos reposado tequila, cranberry liqueur, allspice dram, apple, and fresh lemon juice.
When the weather heats up, the entire venue really comes alive.
“We are always looking for new ways to stay innovative,” Caitlin said. “We have some fun summer programming coming up to highlight our pool, just in time for rooftop season.”
Of course, staying current is to be expected by the Gerber Group, which owns and operates Mr. Purple. The group operates 10 other cocktail bars and restaurants located in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. Other spots owned by the group include The Campbell Bar, Irvington Restaurant, Outlets in TWA Hotel such as the The Sunken Lounge, and Whiskey Blue ATL.
Inventive, delicious cocktails aren’t the only thing couples can order at Mr. Purple. Its restaurant also offers a variety of locally sourced and elevated bar favorites.
“We also offer great sharing options for groups such as flatbreads, empanadas, sliders, and tacos,” Caitlin said. “Chef Cara takes great pride in perfecting the simple yet flavorful menu items that are perfect to pair with our cocktails.”
Some favorite cocktails to pair with plates of filling food include the GG Manhattan as well as a frozen Casamigo margarita, which is also great to have in hand on the sunny rooftop.
Everything is made to order by the creative Mr. Purple team, and many of its members have been there since the beginning. Caitlin said the staff is “one big happy family,” and many workers also have gigs as artists, performers, and musicians when they’re not at Mr. Purple. The relaxed atmosphere of the venue makes it easy for the staff to forge connections with the guests.
“Mr. Purple is a fun environment to work in. Our team members are able to be themselves while providing great service,” she said. “They get to meet new and interesting people every day.”
The bar has plenty of offerings for those who aren’t drinking alcohol. Mr. Purple serves fresh, cold-pressed juices as well as coffee from Afficionado Coffee Roasters.
As the #MrPurple hashtag can attest, many of the couples who frequent Mr. Purple are as classy and on-trend as the bar itself. Locals from New York stop by regularly as do couples from other cities and countries who are enjoying the Big Apple on a romantic getaway.
“It’s a fun, lively atmosphere — and we also have a lot of singles,” Caitlin said.
With its vibrant atmosphere and romantic skyline, Mr. Purple has been the setting for plenty of proposals, according to the staff. On colder evenings, the staff even offers cozy blankets and spiked hot chocolate that can bring couples closer together.
Maybe that’s why some of those proposals happen out of the blue, Caitlin said with a laugh.
“The views of lower Manhattan are exceptional” she said. “We really enjoy being apart of guests special moments. They will come back and remember where it all happened. We get to be a piece of their love story.”
Mr. Purple’s unobstructed views of the city and lively environment keep couples coming back. The establishment is especially beautiful at sunset when couples can see the Empire State Building, the Freedom Tower, and the rest of the city come alive as they begin what could be a magical evening together.
