The Short Version: Since 2007, Painting with a Twist has invited everyday folks to discover their artistic side and create colorful works of art during paint-and-sip nights. These original events encourage participants to try something new alongside friends, family members, or significant others. Many couples head to Painting with a Twist to liven up their evenings or celebrate special occasions by making memories full of paint, wine, and laughter.
I always appreciate it when guys think outside the box and suggest date activities that I haven’t done before. So, when an artsy guitar player suggested we try Painting with a Twist for our second date, I was gung-ho about it.
We looked at Painting with a Twist’s calendar and saw that the team was painting a guitar picture that very weekend. It seemed meant to be, and we booked the reservation on the spot.
Our local Painting with a Twist studio has clusters of tables grouped around the instructor, and we ended up sharing a table with another young couple. When I asked them if they’d gone to a Painting with a Twist class before, they laughed and said yes.
It turns out, their first date was at a paint-and-sip night, and they were coming back over a year later as an engaged couple. “We always say it was love at first paint,” the bride-to-be told us.
Painting with a Twist fosters an imaginative space where people can express themselves and enjoy themselves at the same time, so it’s a natural setting for a date. The art studios allow participants to drink wine, have snacks, and chat as they paint along with the instructor. There’s no pressure to be a Picasso here. As long as you’re having fun, you’re doing it right.
“We offer an experience that no one can top,” said Brittany Graff, the Director of Marketing. “Bringing creativity together with wine and friends — or significant others — is the perfect combination for a fun night out.”
Painting with a Twist is a beloved franchise with art studios in 37 states, and each has its own sense of style. They may be under the umbrella of a corporation, but they feel like small mom-and-pop businesses. Some are run by retired artists, while others are run by former Painting with a Twist participants. These franchise owners may come from all walks of life, but they share a deep appreciation for the art community.
Since 2007, the company has endeavored to bring joy into people’s lives and art into their homes. To date, Painting with a Twist’s locations have inspired the creation of over 11.5 million paintings.
Throughout the week, the Painting with a Twist art studios open their doors, clean their brushes, and maybe uncork a wine bottle or two in anticipation of a fun social evening.
Many of its participants are women between 21 and 49 years old — it’s a popular choice for bachelorette parties or a girls night out — but the adult art events also attract couples who want to escape the typical dinner-and-a-movie dating rut.
Painting with a Twist is open to anyone with an artistic streak. You can even schedule a private party for a little more intimacy. These adult art classes are versatile and casual with plenty of space to exercise your creativity.
Couples seeking an escape from the everyday can come out of their shells at Painting with a Twist’s instructor-led events. Such vibrant, original, and wine-friendly events will make a great, romantic story, and you’ll be able to take home your painting as a keepsake.
The Painting with a Twist art studios always have something new on the calendar, and you can follow Painting with a Twist on social media to stay in the know.
The Painting with a Twist calendar is packed with beautiful sunsets, seascapes, forests, flowers, and animals, and you can’t go wrong painting any of these colorful creations.
You don’t need to have any artistic experience to join a Painting with a Twist class. Most events involve a good mix of talents. The instructor can walk beginners through every step and brushstroke, while also giving more experienced painters the freedom to choose their own colors and do their own thing.
“Whichever piece of art you choose, you are in for a good time,” Brittany said. “Painting with a Twist offers events throughout the week and are perfect for a date night.”
Painting with a Twist will sometimes offer themed paint nights in celebration of a movie or TV show, and it has also been known to throw special Date Night events that cater to couples. These paint nights typically involve creating two paintings that form one work of art.
It’s a fun way to test your talent and work as a team to create something beautiful. Whether they feature a heart, a tree, or wine glasses, these paired paintings offer a romantic reminder of what couples can accomplish together. Be sure to reserve your seats early because these date night events tend to sell out.
Over the years, many couples have chosen Painting with a Twist as their go-to date locale, and some have celebrated marriage proposals or anniversaries here as well. Brittany told us she even knew of a handful of couples who have tied the knot at a Painting with a Twist studio.
“This is so heartwarming for us,” she said. “We pride ourselves on providing our guests with phenomenal experiences. And by doing that, we get to be a part of some of the most important days of their lives!”
The inspiration for Painting with a Twist came during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Cathy Deano and Renee Maloney wanted to help the Louisiana community recover and remind people to have fun, so they began hosting events that were part art event and part wine tasting. These events began as a way to entertain their friends and family, and then it expanded into a full-blown business.
Cathy and Renee opened their first art studio in New Orleans in 2007. Today, Painting with a Twist has 295 locations in 37 states.
The business has expanded from a two-person operation to a national franchise; however, the founding intent to help the community has not changed one iota.
Painting with a Twist organizes monthly charity events, known as Painting with a Purpose, to give back in a meaningful way. Half the proceeds from these events go directly to local charities. These events have raised over $5 million for nonprofit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and Odyssey House.
Painting with a Twist is a company with heart, and its philanthropic spirit has impacted many people’s lives. As Brittany said, “A major part of our founders’ mission, which has been instilled in every studio since inception, is to give back to the communities we serve.”
Painting with a Twist gives couples a place where they can relax and talk while creating something new. Its studios have been the backdrop for countless date nights, anniversaries, birthday parties, and celebrations in the last decade. Some couples have even gotten married at a Painting with a Twist studio.
While my own painting date night didn’t end with a trip down the aisle, it was definitely an experience I’ll never forget — especially because I have a guitar painting as a souvenir.
If you’re looking for a unique date idea, Painting with a Twist can offer a nice blend of boozy fun and casual artistry. Check out the calendar at your local studio to get inspiration for your next date night.
“The artists in our studio are more than artists; they truly are entertainers who keep guests laughing all night,” Brittany said. “It’s the perfect place to create lasting memories.”
