Women's Dating
Phoebe Fox’s “The Breakup Doctor” isn’t the typical dating advice or self-help book. It’s the story of Brook Ogden, a fictional mental health counselor and self-professed breakup doctor.
But it’s not your typical chick lit choice either. Brook Ogden is a matchmaker-in-reverse. Matchmakers bring people together, but Brook is there to help pick up the pieces after things fall apart.
Fox has always had a love of stories, particularly about people, how they think and why they do what they do. Before turning to fiction writing, Fox worked a variety of different jobs, ranging from a screenwriter to a game show host. In addition to being a novelist, she also shares her dating expertise as a guest blogger on relationships for the Huffington Post.
In 2005, she discovered the famous guide to 21st century relationships, “He’s Just Not That Into You,” and her outlook on dating — and life in general — was changed forever.
She took the advice to heart, and it inspired her to craft the character of Brook and to tell her story in two best-selling novels.
Both of Fox’s books are charming and funny, but they still manage to give us dating advice we can actually use.
This was Fox’s debut novel and is where we first meet the book’s eponymous character, Brook Ogden.
Brook seems to have her life in order with a great job and successful advice column, but while she’s trying to heal the wounds of her clients’ breakups, her own relationships take a turn for the worse.
Now Brook questions herself and whether or not she’s cut out to give advice to others while she’s struggling to keep her life together.
Brook’s character is well-rounded and witty, making for the ideal heroine. She goes on an emotional journey through the book, yet she still manages to dish out advice that always feels directly relatable to your personal life.
Through Brook, we learn it’s OK to hit rock bottom and sometimes life falls apart, only to come back together in a more meaningful way.
The series continues March 24, when Fox launches “Bedside Manners.” The sequel starts off similarly, and Brook Ogden is back.
She’s trying to move on from her past rocky dating life, with a career that’s taking off. Between her clients, advice column, radio show and new group therapy sessions she manages, Brook is too busy helping others with their dating troubles to help herself.
But then a date she only took as revenge to an ex turns into something more, and an old client (and love interest) re-enters Brook’s life. Suddenly her persona as a cool, calm and collected therapist begins to crack all over again.
Her experiences in the novel are true to life and inspire us to better handle the situations in our life. Just like “The Breakup Doctor,” Brook manages to give us constructive advice, while Fox’s writing will make you laugh out loud, making “Bedside Manners” the perfect complement.
With an impressive 4.7 star rating on Amazon, it’s clear we’re not the only ones who enjoyed the musings of “The Breakup Doctor.” Fans of the books are anxiously awaiting a third novel of the saga, and the reviews are loaded with hopeful predictions of where Brook will go next.
