The only modification the couple needed to make was wearing masks to and from the airport and during their spa treatments.

Another couple, Justin and Summer, also traveled to St. Lucia during the pandemic with help from Unforgettable Honeymoons.

“There was very little that Covid impacted. You are required to wear a mask at common areas (walking to the beach, walking to the dining area, walking to the spa) at the resort, but once you get to the beach, your table, etc., you are not required to continue wearing a mask. It wasn’t an issue at all,” the couple wrote.

Planning vacations for couples during a pandemic is new for Renee Meyer, Unforgettable Honeymoon’s Founder and President. However, she has more than 25 years of experience helping couples prepare every detail of their honeymoons, so travel restrictions haven’t thrown her for much of a loop.

“A lot of couples feel safer outside the United States because the numbers are lower out there. The people at the resorts are bending over backward, and the planes are sparkling clean,” Renee told us.

And Unforgettable Honeymoons will continue helping couples celebrate those important relationship milestones well after travelers come back in full force.

A Unique Travel Agency Focused on the Most Romantic Trip of All

When Renee was planning her own honeymoon in 1987, she said her funds were limited. She only had $1,500 to spend and went to a traditional travel agent to see how she could make the most of her money.

“The agent told me that I didn’t have enough money to book a trip. They wouldn’t help me because I was on a budget,” Renee said.

After that, she searched for a honeymoon-specific agency, but found nothing.

Flash forward to the early 1990s, when Renee worked at a dating service. She had a knack for matching couples, many of whom found lasting relationships and got married. They asked her where they should spend their honeymoons, and because of her strong interest in travel, she suggested places for them could go.

“I’d traveled a lot because I’d been a professional skater and had the travel bug. One of my clients told me that I seemed excited about suggesting where they should go for their honeymoon. She asked me if I’d ever thought about starting my own business,” Renee told us.

One morning, she woke up with the inspiration for the company’s name — Unforgettable Honeymoons — in her head. She opened her business in Portland, Oregon, soon after. Since she already had extensive knowledge about the places couples would enjoy, all she needed to get her business off the ground was a website.

Once the website launched, Renee immediately saw the demand for a honeymoon-focused travel company.

“Within a week, I had 100 emails from people around the country who needed help with their honeymoons,” she said.

Designing Packages for Any Travel Style

Over the years, Unforgettable Honeymoons has designed more than 10,000 honeymoons for couples around the United States and the world. Renee and her team said they have seen some changes in relationship demographics and honeymoon expectations.

In the mid-1990s, the average couple getting married for the first time ranged in age from early- to mid-20s, Renee said. Now, first-marriage couples are often in their late 20s to early 30s. The company also sees more second marriages.

“I would say it’s evenly-split between first honeymoons and second honeymoons. We see a lot of people in their late 30s and early 40s getting married for the second time,” Renee explains.

Clients typically live in major metropolitan areas in the United States. Many of its clients live outside of Oregon because Unforgettable Honeymoons operates nationally through email, phone, and text.

Some couples don’t know where they want to go on their honeymoons, said Renee, so they start scrolling through beautiful photos of exotic locations. Renee said that isn’t the best strategy.

Unforgettable Honeymoons offers inclusive resort packages that couples won’t find elsewhere.

“People make a decision based on photos and price, which will only lead to dissatisfaction. Some of these destinations look beautiful, but they aren’t the right match for your personal travel style,” she said.

Renee has designed a questionnaire for couples to fill out that ensures the travel agency matches them to their ideal getaway. The questionnaire asks couples the three must-haves they each want on their honeymoon. For instance, one couple may want a secluded place to stay, but still want the option to participate in many activities. Other couples may want sightseeing options and a private jacuzzi or plunge pool.

Unforgettable Honeymoons asks couples to describe their travel history. If they’re used to high-end resorts, they may be disappointed with a budget vacation. Newlyweds can also let the team know the places they’ve traveled to before in their relationship that they loved or hated.

“We like couples to give us as much information as possible. What’s on your dream list? What’s important?” Renee said. “We need to know these things to match you with the right plan. We don’t want couples to have negative surprises.”
