Reader Question:

I’ve been dating this girl for almost two years. The thing is her ego is so big that she won’t listen to what I say or anything. She won’t tell me anything anymore. She won’t tell me I love you or that she doesn’t want to lose me. She blows me off.

How do I tell her how I feel and make her see?

-Emily (Georgia)

Dr. Wendy Walsh’s Answer:

Dear Emily:

And why, may I ask, do you love this woman? It sounds like it’s all about her and you are her friendly doormat.

Here’s the hard news, darling. We can talk all day long but you know what happens when you bring a horse to water. You can’t make her behave like a gracious lover. But what you can do is change how you behave toward her.

If you aren’t getting your needs met, outline them in a clear, kind, calm conversation. Then back up your words with behavior. If she’s not loving and kind, then you should be far less available.

Time to roll up that doormat, hon. You deserve to be loved.
