How Do I Ask for More Space?

There are two sentences a woman never wants to hear from a boyfriend – “I just want to be friends” and “I need some space.” If at all possible, you should avoid both like the plague.

If you feel your girlfriend is suffocating you, and you really do need some space from her before you lose your mind, try to give her other plausible reasons why you won’t be hanging out with her as much in the coming weeks.

Tell her you have been assigned a project at your job that will require you to work long hours at home after work. Or, try explaining that while you love hanging out with her, you feel your priorities are out of whack and you need some time to get things back in order, including getting back in the gym on a regular basis.

Tell her you miss your friends and want to hang out with them more often. Do your best to refrain from using the word “space.” Be sure to use this time – and space – to evaluate your relationship and figure out why you need space.

Maybe she just isn’t the one for you and you need to tell her you just want to be friends.
