The Short Version: If you’re planning a wedding in Los Angeles, you can skip the hassle of searching through gig economy sites for a DJ or MC. Second Song is a personalized wedding DJ music service tailored to your needs. Co-Founder Anna Blecker explains that Second Song fills the void in the wedding music industry by providing a smooth and personalized journey from the moment you book to the final setup and breakdown on your big day.
One of the highlights of my wedding was the abundance of compliments we received about the music. We opted for a five-piece band comprising talented twenty-somethings who knew their way around rock instruments.
Whether they were belting out something upbeat like “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by The Police or soulful renditions such as “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys, guests flocked to the dance floor — and stayed there.
Unsurprisingly, a survey shows that more than half of all engaged couples say they look forward to music and dancing the most. But if we’re being honest, most of us know it’s the maestro who holds the power to shape the spirit of the occasion.
Second Song is the Los Angeles area’s premier wedding DJ experience that helps bring weddings to life thanks to its expertly trained DJs and MCs who can win over a crowd and pull everyone together for one last slow dance.
The brains behind Second Song are Co-founders Anna Blecker and Rob Corrall, who started with the goal to stand out from other music vendors in the LA area.
“We both love the wedding industry and wanted to start something together,” said Anna. “We’ve grown so much ever since. We’re here to create amazing experiences with live entertainment, and it’s a really fun thing to be a part of.”
Anna and Rob already had years of experience in the wedding industry when they founded Second Song in 2019.
“We figured the wedding DJ market had a lot of opportunity, but we felt the actual profession side of it needed some refreshing,” Anna recalls. “With Second Song, local DJs come to us, and we train them. We’ll also provide customer service and everything included in the day-of setup, so the DJ knows the plan, and the couple doesn’t have to worry about the process.”
They also had established relationships with local wedding planners and vendors, so it was a no-brainer. Second Song also offers other services, including lighting setup and photo booths.
“We know the industry very well, so I think our experience and years of being in the market really help people trust us,” Anna notes. “We’ve handled it all in-house, and we provide the DJ with everything they need to go out there and do a good job.”
Second Song makes choosing a DJ easy by providing quality service over quantity with utmost personalization. Some standard packages include:
Each package includes a professional DJ and MC (DJs typically create and mix the playlists, while an MC is the face who interacts with the guests), complete setup and breakdown, dance floor lights, and full planning services.
The longer packages include more if you’re looking for a full service, including specific cocktail-hour playlists and a custom DJ facade to help pull the entire night’s vibe together.
With Second Song’s customer-centric and customizable approach, you can relax knowing you won’t deal with any back-and-forth quotes, meetings, surprise cancellations, or last-minute changes.
Unlike movie tropes that depict stressful moments (forgotten cakes, missing grooms, or tardy DJs due to traffic), Second Song ensures a seamless experience without surprises.
“I think what sets us apart is the communication side of it and the processes and systems we’ve put in place to make the client experience as seamless as possible. We handle the admin side and make sure it’s a really simple and smooth process for the couple,” Anna says. “We take a little bit of that worry away for them, so on the day, they can just relax and have a good time and celebrate.”
Anna says couples typically reach out between six to 12 months in advance, but plenty of weddings are catered to on shorter notice.
“Obviously, the earlier you book, the better options you get and the more availability we have, but we will always have someone available even if you book last minute,” Anna guarantees. “We’re very flexible; with us, the communication is always straightforward.”
When you schedule your event with Second Song, either Anna or Rob will introduce you to a selection of DJs who align with your musical preferences. Share your must-play songs and the overall mood you’d like for your wedding’s soundtrack. Your DJ will then craft a personalized music plan tailored to each part of the day.
“We handle everything on the backend with the planning and communication, but the DJ deals with 100% of the music side of things, so you’re always working with experts,” Anna says. “This way, the DJ doesn’t have to worry about all the little details that go into the timeline, like when and where the speakers stay on. We handle that in advance so the DJ can focus on creating a personalized music experience.”
As for who the DJs are, you can look at the predetermined list of available DJs with Second Song. Second Song is unique because it hires experienced local DJs who have been vetted, and communicates directly with them when they’re put in touch with a couple.
Second Song’s DJs blend various genres to cater to different age groups with tailored song selections that reflect a couple’s preferences and accommodate guest demographics.
“Every DJ has some style, so what’s cool with weddings is the versatility. While a club DJ may excel in one setting, you want someone who can blend different genres to cater to different age groups and cultures,” Anna notes. “It’s all about offering a little bit of everything so everyone has fun.”
If you’ve been to a wedding with a DJ recently, odds are you know which songs are making the top songs of the night.
Anna says Earth, Wind & Fire songs are always a crowd favorite, with recent trends showing a growing affinity toward ABBA’s 1979 hit song “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”
(Maybe it’s like flare jeans or center parts: What’s old is new again.)
“There are wedding classics that some people love, and some don’t, but at the end of the day, it brings people together,” said Anna. “Some people like cheesy wedding DJs; some prefer more timeless music. You just need a bit of that to get all the generations together, and we really can adhere to it all.”
Many couples like to spice it up with the bangers and the hits once the older guests and grandparents are off to bed, said Anna with a chuckle.
Anna and Rob also own a couple of other brands in the wedding industry, including Blitz Nation.
Like Second Song, Blitz Nation recruits local bands to connect with couples who want live music for their weddings. Genres range from soul to Latin and dance to rock and everything in between. Choose a string quartet or a Spanish guitarist — whatever you prefer, the odds are good Blitz Nation has the right group.
You can also work with live music independently, like adding a saxophone player alongside a DJ or a harpist for walking down the aisle.
Try Anna and Rob’s other brand, Feature Booth, to spice up the night’s activities. Feature Booth offers a customizable wedding experience with a 360-degree immersive experience and your chosen backdrop.
“At the end of the day, my advice is to look for someone you have a good, trusting vibe with,” Anna emphasizes. “Look at your different options — and if we connect with you, we’re thrilled. If you want a really smooth process that is engaging and fun for you to be part of, then we are here to provide that.”
