As soon as you’ve gotten your SO’s family to love you over the holidays, you’re headed straight into V-Day time!  Valentine’s Day can be another stressful time for guys as you’re challenged to find her the perfect gift that conveys all you feel about her while still being unique and thoughtful.  It’s hard to always be on point with your gift giving!  I screwed up on this one too.  I once got my then-girlfriend the SlapChop mincer for her birthday! Still living that one down.

So let’s categorize some fun ideas to help you get a few good ideas.  We will check out some affordable gifts, some creative ones and personalized presents as well.  If these don’t hit the mark for you, hopefully they can get you brainstorming on some cool ideas.

4 Affordable Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

I know that sometimes we are not swimming in cash.  Over my life I’ve had times of having lots of money and not a lot of time and others with having LOTS of time and no money.  So I’ve had to get creative with my money when it came time to give gifts.  I have found that making something simple is usually a great way to show that you are thinking of them.  If you can’t give the gift or your money, give the gift of your time.

Cross-Stitch Messages

This is something that I have picked up again in the last 10 years.  For my second wedding anniversary, I was underemployed at the time, so I had lots of free time.  As the second anniversary was cotton, I decided to pick up some cotton thread and make her a little cross-stitch.  Now first off, cross-stitching is fun and not just for the ladies.  I love making Star Wars and Xbox patterns, it gives me something to do with my hands while I watch TV or listen to podcasts, and you have something you MADE at the end.

When I gave my wife her gift, she started crying and said no one had ever taken the time to make something like that for her.  Win!

There are tons of simple patterns to make her smile.  Or you could put your names, dates, hearts, or if you’re feeling confident, you can get a photo of her turned into a pattern.  Just give yourself some leeway as it does take a little time.

Wood Card

This is another project I did.  I am a pretty creative dude, and I love Michael’s. I was originally just headed there to pick up a normal Valentine’s Day card, but I saw these wood slices and I got an idea. I picked up a set of stencils and a few small paints. I had no idea what I was doing really, as I had never done stenciling before.

A wood card is a creative gift idea that’s easy to make with stencils.

You can tell the bottom left is a li’l bit squished and messy, but I figured it out by the time I did the letter. Super easy, super fun, super affordable!

Scrabble Frame

Go get a Scrabble game.  You can find used ones at your local thrift store, or pick up a new one.  Get yourself a simple frame.  Then glue your names into Scrabble patterns.  Use places you’ve been, things you’ve bonded over, and words like “love”, “heart” or “special” to connect them all.  It’s like playing your own, one-sided game with love as the prize!

Bottle Gardening

If you are just not the crafty type and just want the ease of ordering something fun, I’ve got your gift.  Many of us would love to have indoor plants or herbs, but don’t have the space, knowledge or supplies.  With this unique gift, you can turn any used wine or whiskey bottle into your own indoor garden.  Plant some herbs you can use later in cooking or get some flower seeds to give her that pop of color!

4  Creative Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

I am creative and love giving creative gifts, but sometimes, the brain just won’t come up with any interesting or unique ideas.  (Or you totally forgot and need to get a speedy gift.)  Here are a few easy creative gift ideas for you.

Unique Picture Puzzles

Turn one or more of your favorite photos together into a puzzle. Go on your and her socials and pull a few photos that make you smile and bring back good memories.  Arrange them in any way you want and you can get them made into a custom puzzle.  Some places will even make unique puzzle pieces like hearts and stars.  Have some fun, pour a glass of wine and reconstruct some of your favorite memories.

Groupon Experiences

I love Groupon because it helps me come up with some good ideas or lets me know what’s around that I may not even be aware of.  So many of us have had smaller lives these last two years, so getting out and having experiences is always something that will bring some joy.  The area you live in will have different things going on locally, but there are always some interesting things afoot!

Enjoying time together can be the best gift of all.

Go break s#*& in a break room in NYC. Drive exotic cars in Iowa. Forge your own bottle opener in Seattle. The choices are endless!

Fantasy Map Life Story

As a fantasy fan who is overjoyed that all his favorite book series are being made into TV shows, I love this particular idea. At the beginning of many books, you’ll find your fantasy maps, replete with mysterious sounding names, long-forgotten realms and unique topographical features. Spend some time working with a mapmaker and give details on places you’ve been, important names or dates and vacations spent together.  Then he’ll concoct an amazing map, detailing your love story.  Totally unique!

3 Personalized Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

Personalized gifts are always a great idea.  Now I don’t mean get your significant other a little charm bracelet, but use your knowledge of her to get her something unique.

Old-Fashioned Love Letters

In the days of smartphones, Snaps and texts, most of our correspondence is done electronically.  But let’s harken back to the days of yore in the ‘90s, when if you wanted to tell someone something, you had to write it down.  Since we don’t usually get anything handwritten anymore, it’ll definitely stand out.

Find your local paper or craft place and buy a piece of thick handmade cotton paper.  Write out why you love your partner, remind her of a happy memory or pen a cheesy poem.  For the extra win, get some wax and a seal and really put your gift over the top.

 A Photo Becomes a Portrait

Turn a photo of your loved one into a museum-worthy portrait. No one will ever think to turn themselves into a Baroque viscount overlooking the Seine.  So you’re definitely going to come in with a unique angle.

Make sure your significant other has a sense of humor, and a place to hang the portrait.  Done right, it’ll give you something to smile about for years.

A Custom Song Written for Your Partner

We all fantasize about having a song written about us someday. Well, we fantasize about having a GOOD song, not getting ripped apart by Taylor Swift or Alanis Morissette. Since most of us were not born with hit songs in our heads, there’s a service for that.

Just fill in your names and some details about your relationship and your own personal hitmaker will turn your relationship into a great song. While it may not crack the charts, you’ll be sure to crack her heart!

Give a Gift That Comes From the Heart

Valentine’s Day can be an opportunity for couples to strengthen their connections and get a little romance going. But you’ve got to bring your A-game when it comes to getting a gift or planning a date.

As with most things, the more thought you put into it, the more value you’ll bring to the gifting experience. You can use these Valentine’s Day gift ideas as a starting point and see what other fun alternatives you come up with.  I would love to hear any other ideas that have worked for you guys in the past. Have a great Valentine’s Day, and see you in the spring!
