In 1985, the sci-fi film “Cocoon” came out. The story line follows a group of trespassing seniors who swim in a pool containing alien cocoons. The seniors take in some of the life force from the pool and it causes them to feel younger, stronger and happier.

The all-star cast features Maureen Stapleton, Jessica Tandy, Gwen Verdon and Herta Ware — senior actresses who find youth in an unlikely place.

Today, senior women don’t have to seek out chlorine-filled reservoirs housing alien pods to feel young again. They can simply turn on their computer and sign up to one of the hundreds of active online dating sites.

But with all of the different places to meet a man, how does a senior woman choose the perfect dating site? Here are a few tips to help narrow it down.

1. Free.

Most online dating sites will offer free, basic memberships so you can check it out before committing your credit card. This only gives you a surface overview, but it will help you weed a few out that don’t match what you’re looking for.

seniors would be much different than the 1985 version.”

2. Tailored.

These days, a lot of sites are tailored toward specific demographics. Seniors are one of the hottest niches right now. There’s SilverSingles, Senior Match, Dating for Seniors, Senior Passions and Silver Fishing to name a few.

3. Ask for help.

Most likely, things have changed since you were last playing the field. Don’t be embarrassed to ask friends or family for help setting up your profile or choosing a site.

4. Have a plan.

Before you start messaging back and forth with potential mates, have an idea of the kind of man you’re looking for and the level of commitment you’re interested in.

If Ron Howard remade “Cocoon” today, his rejuvenated seniors would be much different than the 1985 version. They’d probably be texting each other and trying out online dating sites with their newfound lease on life.
