Discuss This! Discuss This!

Am I the only one who will read something about their zodiac sign and half the time think, “How did they know this about me?” And the other half of the time think, “They’re completely off!” It’s always exciting when horoscopes seem to know everything about you and can be funny when they’re dead wrong.

Lots of people out there still think astrology is a good judge of character and can help you find your future partner. Dating in today’s digital age can be difficult, given the rise of dating apps and lack of interpersonal connections.

Understanding your personality type and what you’re drawn to can help you navigate your romantic search, and maybe zodiac signs can be more helpful than initially thought.

It all depends on what you believe, and according to our recent study that looked at the perceptions of more than 500 Americans, it appears most people are split on whether zodiac compatibility has an impact on the health of your relationship.

More Than 50% of Participants Admit to Checking Zodiac Compatibility Before a First Date

It’s no secret that we all want to find someone with a personality that complements ours, and astrology continues to be tempting when it comes to trying to understand people. While we all wish dating was as easy as checking someone’s birthday to find a match, relationships are a lot harder than that.

In fact, nearly 63% of respondents admitted to having a successful relationship with someone whose zodiac sign was not considered compatible with theirs. So don’t be afraid of giving a new sign a chance (I’ve got your back, Geminis)!

Astrology and dating statistics

I think we can all admit that we get sucked into TikToks that accurately describe our zodiac signs, and seeing what our date thinks about their sign can be a fun way to get to know them. About 67% of respondents stated that they were likely to ask someone about their zodiac sign on a first date

Laughing over how far-off our signs are or bonding over a statement that’s scary-accurate can be a great way to help ease any nerves on a first date while also secretly getting to know more about their personality.

“While zodiac signs are not a sole factor to consider when navigating relationship dynamics, people can use them as a way to break the ice with potential romantic partners,” said Dr. Terri Orbuch, “The Love Doctor” with DatingAdvice.com. “By discussing zodiac signs and astrology, you can get to know someone on a deeper level and determine if their destiny is among the stars which enriches connection and fosters fun discussions.”

Zodiac Signs Seem to Have Little Influence When It Comes to Deciding Whether to Pursue Someone

Dating apps have become mainstream in today’s world, and we all know that a profile just isn’t enough to tell us whether a person is meant to be or not. While you may think astrology gives you a better idea if someone is “the one,” filtering by zodiac sign doesn’t seem to be something people are interested in.

“People should continue to trust their own judgment when dating.” — Dr. Terri, relationship expert

Our study found that only 27% of respondents have filtered potential matches based on their sign and only 1 in 5 say they would refuse a date solely based on their zodiac. This tells us that goofy pictures and fun facts are going to go a lot farther in getting a date than your zodiac sign will.

“People should continue to trust their own judgment when dating and keep more of an open mind when meeting people for the first time,” said Dr. Terri. “It can be difficult to truly get to know someone by their profile on an app, and you tend to get a better sense of someone’s personality through conversation.”

Respondents Remain Split on the Impact Astrology Has on Successful Relationships

Making someone laugh or sharing things in common are more likely to get you a date than your horoscope sign, but people still can’t seem to come to an agreement on whether sign compatibility is the key to a successful relationship. The data show that 49% of people surveyed believe having a compatible zodiac sign does impact the health of the relationship, while 51% believe it does not — almost a 50/50 split.

“There is no scientific evidence that compatible zodiac signs between partners lead to better relationships,” said Dr. Terri. “There are many factors that impact how we get along with others, and while zodiac signs are a fun topic to discuss, they are not direct reflections of who we are.”

For some people, not sharing the same favorite band is enough not to want to date someone, while others may care more about your sense of humor or whether you’re a dog or a cat person. It’s different for everyone, and the best way to figure out who’s right for you is to follow your gut. It’s hard to say why we like certain people over others, but the best thing we can do for ourselves is be true to who we are and be open to new things!

Methodology

In September 2024, we surveyed 504 individuals on their thoughts when it comes to the role zodiac signs play in romantic compatibility. The respondents ranged from ages 18 to 65+, with an average age range of 36 to 45. Participants were 53% women, 47% men, and 0.2% chose not to disclose. Additionally, 100% of people surveyed were in the United States.
