Short version: As a frequent talk show guest, bestselling author, and even a sex toy designer, Annabelle Knight can be described as a jack-of-all-trades. She’s a certified couples counselor who has devoted her life to improving the lives of romantic partners — both in an out of bed. To that end, she provides advice on sex, body language, and other often misunderstood aspects of dating and relationships on TV shows, in magazines, and through social media. While she continues to appear on talk shows and advise celebrity couples, Annabelle is focused on writing her second novel.
Sex and relationship expert Annabelle Knight wasn’t expecting her first novel, “The Endless Autumn,” to become a romance bestseller, but that’s what happened.
“I’ve sold over 10,000 copies, which, for a new author, is just brilliant,” she said.
The novel is somewhat of a departure for Annabelle, who spends much of her time online and on-screen on UK talk shows, like “The O’Brien Show,” “This Morning,” and “Loose Women,” to name a few, offering advice about sex, love, and relationships.
But the novel doesn’t stray from Annabelle’s topics of expertise — sex and love. In fact, she describes her work as “a mash-up of ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’”
The novel follows protagonist Autumn, who has just endured a breakup, as she begins a new job at an events company. There, she becomes embroiled in sexual exploits that, as Annabelle described, “go well beyond whips and handcuffs.” Ultimately, though, Autumn must decide if she wants adventurous sex, traditional romance, or both.
Her publisher describes the novel as “ a sizzling, steamy and sexually sinister story of how a girl next door, unwittingly — but perhaps not unwillingly — explores the fringes of desire and release.”
But no one has enjoyed the novel’s popularity more than Annabelle herself.
“It has become a bestseller in the UK and has been nominated for an award in literature,” she said. “My readers are mainly women 18 to 35, but I have had a lot of men read my book, too. That’s a lovely surprise for me, as I really didn’t expect it.”
Before she became a novelist, Annabelle offered advice directly to clients looking to find — or repair — their love lives. She gleaned a great deal of satisfaction from her profession.
“I love helping people, so what I do feels extremely natural for me,” she said.
Though she has many projects on the backburner, Annabelle doesn’t rely solely on what she already knows to guide her advice. She continues to educate herself on the latest trends, techniques, and research about sex and relationships.
“I’m constantly taking courses, reading studies, articles, and blogs to gain as much knowledge as possible,” she said. “You can never know enough and, from my point of view, it’s important to be knowledgeable if you’re going to give advice.”
Her advice appears in many outlets, from talk shows to reality shows, as well as in print in The Sun and Cosmopolitan.
“I write for a variety of publications, so my readers tend to vary depending on who I’m writing for,” Annabelle said. “I’m so lucky to have it that way because writing for different audiences keeps me on my toes.”
Annabelle is a no-holds-barred, straightforward love adviser, and will often provide her readers with information they won’t easily find elsewhere. In an article for the UK tabloid Metro, she offered her expert opinion for the article “Is It Possible to Masturbate Too Much?”
“Overly enthusiastic masturbation may result in small injuries such as a tear. If you’ve found this happening to you use lube to reduce friction, keep your fingernails filed and experiment with varying levels of pressure,” she wrote in the piece.
But how does Annabelle characterize the kind of advice she offers?
“The main thing I want people to take away is that I’m all about cultivating happy and healthy relationships through communication, emotional nurturing, great sex and compassion,” she said.
On her website, she offers a compendium of love and sex questions asked by her readership. Annabelle’s complete, sophisticated answers to common questions about porn, privacy, and sexual health are featured under her AskAnnabelle hashtag.
One reader posed the question, “My kid watches porn, what should I do?”
Annabelle responded by identifying one of the initial problems with watching porn, especially for those who haven’t had sex. “Foreplay doesn’t exist. In porn the action starts pretty much straight away, you may get the odd thirty seconds of foreplay here and there, but, on the whole, it’s completely overlooked … Not only is foreplay fun it’s also a key element of a mutually happy and healthy sexual experience.”
Annabelle has used her expertise on bringing passion back into the bedroom to design a line of sex toys. Her line of sex toys includes clitoral and G-spot vibrators, as well as butt plugs. Each sex toy is given a cheeky name, including Wowee!, Wow!, Oh My!, and Oooh! Each toy is designed for woman’s pleasure and comes in a pleasing lavender color.
UK retailer LoveHoney calls Annabelle its resident sexpert and makes her book available in its store. She uses all of these outlets to drive home her philosophy on intimacy: What’s the point of sex without imagination?
This connection is clear for Annabelle. “My favorite story is from a newlywed couple,” she said. “They took my book on their honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed reading it together.”
For those looking for ways to improve their relationships or spark a dying flame, Annabelle’s advice can be found in many places.
“I try and post relevant content every week and put out videos as often as I can,” she said. “I regularly appear on daytime TV shows, on the radio, and in newspapers and magazines.”
She also updates her social media profiles and regularly adds videos to her website. Fans who want a steady stream of thoughtful relationship advice can follow her on Twitter or Instagram.
“I try and keep my finger on the pulse of society — and celebrities — so my content is always fresh and relevant,” she said.
For a creative person like Annabelle, the next project on her agenda is often as much a mystery to her as it is to her fans.
“My goals change so often depending on what I’ve achieved,” she said. “I’m constantly working towards creative fulfillment and love new projects and challenges.”
Now, though, she’s committed to her next major writing project — a second novel, which is in its final stages.
“Barely a year ago, I just wanted to get a book written. Then I wanted to get it published and then I wanted to have a best seller and an audiobook. Now, I’m on to wanting “The Endless Autumn” to be made into a film.” — Sex Expert Annabelle Knight
“It is very exciting, but I’m also hugely nervous. I’d love for it to do as well as the first,” she said.
Never someone to rest on her laurels, Annabelle is already considering her next steps — and projecting her dreams onto the big screen.
“Barely a year ago, I just wanted to get a book written. Then I wanted to get it published and then I wanted to have a best seller and an audiobook. Now, I’m on to wanting “The Endless Autumn” to be made into a film,” she said. “So, you know, I don’t want much!”
