The Short Version: Since 1991, Atlantis Events has organized incredible gay-friendly vacations to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and other exotic destinations. The travel company works with luxury cruise lines and resorts to give the LGBTQ community a dynamic and safe travel experience. When you make a reservation for these cruises, you’ll join thousands of gay men who are on board to have fun and meet new people. Some show up with their friends or romantic partners, while others travel solo and build connections at dance parties, cocktail hours, and group dinners. Swept up by the exuberance of the crowd, guests traveling with Atlantis can feel comfortable being themselves and letting down their walls in this uniquely accepting and undeniably romantic setting.
Atlantis Events runs special cruises and vacations to encourage members of the LGBTQ community to come together and celebrate their differences. Jim Cone, Vice President of Marketing for Atlantis, said he’s constantly amazed by the diversity, enthusiasm, and friendliness of the cruise goers.
Jim has made many lasting friendships out on the open ocean during these vacation events. Conversation comes easily, he said, because of the friendly, inclusive vibe of everyone on the trips.
One night during dinner on a cruise ship, Jim met an older couple who said they’d been together for 60 years. They’d grown up living next door to one another, and when they came out as a gay couple in the 1960s, the men faced significant persecution. They said some of their homophobic neighbors would throw rocks through their windows to intimidate them.
Hearing their story, Jim couldn’t help but feel touched by the adversity the couple faced. “I thanked them for what they went through,” he said. “They stood by who they were as people, they were confident, and they never let anyone knock them down. Because of them, I think we as a society have progressed tremendously.”
In 1991, Atlantis organized an all-gay takeover of Club Med Resort in Playa Blanca, Mexico. Over 300 gay men spent a week loving life on the beach, and they went away tanned, laughing, and wondering when they could go back. Atlantis has since become the largest company dedicated to creating vacations for gay men and lesbian women.
Today, thousands of adults of all ages, backgrounds, and orientations party together during these all-gay vacations. There is no typical Atlantis guest — they come from around the world, representing 80+ countries, to enjoy a week-long vacation in a colorful, open-minded atmosphere.
According to Jim, “We create an environment where it’s very easy for people to socialize with each other and meet each other and develop friendships and relationships that last a lifetime.”
Every year, Atlantis plans 8 to 10 vacations and helps over 20,000 guests have a good time. They take over an entire resort or cruise ship, so they can feel at safe and accepted by a gay-friendly crowd. Typically, over 90% of attendees are gay men. All the programming is tailored to the LGBTQ community, and Atlantis brings in famous entertainers and world-class DJs to excite guests.
Atlantis has planned trips in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, South America, Australia, and Asia. This summer, Atlantis sails Celebrity Constellation taking 2000 guests to the beautiful coasts of Italy, France, and Spain. Guests will experience top gay and lesbian entertainment, thrill to outrageous parties, and relax poolside aboard the gorgeous Celebrity Constellation.
Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or traveling solo, Atlantis is ready to accommodate and entertain you on a vacation like no other.
“You’ll see every type of person you could imagine. When you have 5,000 people on a ship, you get a great mixture of a lot of different people,” Jim said. “The diversity is amazing, and that’s a beautiful thing in the world, and I love that we help further the idea that differences are great.”
Atlantis provides plenty of opportunity for singles to meet people, so individuals can show up by themselves and come away with a new group of bffs. The company’s signature T-dances, held in the afternoon on cruising days, give guests an automatic icebreaker because everyone wears colored stickers to indicate their relationship statuses. Green means single. Red means taken. Yellow means sorta single. You can dance with people in a low-pressure environment and know upfront who’s single and who’s not.
“Our guests are adventurous and they like to try new things,” Jim said, “so we often do use the biggest and best and newest ships that we can.”
During the cruises, Atlantis catches people’s attention with a full program of events. Whether you enjoy all-day dance parties, pre-dinner cocktails, or late-night comedy shows, the calendar is packed with opportunities to come out of your shell and share a laugh with your fellow cruisers.
Staff members show up to every event and dinner to make sure guests have a wonderful time at all times. You can see Atlantis team members showing people to their seats, introducing friend groups to one another, and providing the hands-on personalized customer service that makes the travel company stand out in the LGBTQ community.
You don’t have to look very hard to find commonality at an event. You can attend meetups for singles, couples, parents, and other types of people looking to bond with like-minded individuals.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re an introvert or an extrovert,” Jim said. “People’s walls come down in this environment, and it becomes very easy to mix and mingle.”
The men who join Atlantis tend to have incredibly high standards about the entertainment and experience they want — and many of them come away completely satisfied by the level of service Atlantis provides. A majority of the men who go on these cruises are repeat customers. They come back year after year and go on cruise after cruise because they feel at home in this atmosphere.
Jim A. said on Yelp that he and his partner have gone on over 10 Atlantis cruises over the years and met people from all walks of life. “We have had amazing vacations all over the world,” he said in a five-star review of Atlantis. “Most of us come with a super positive attitude, and I believe you get back the energy that you’re willing to put into things. We love these cruises.”
“Great sense of community. You feel like you can be yourself 24/7,” said Michael L. in 2016. He and his husband have gone on three Atlantis cruises, and he said it was an equal mix of singles and couples aboard. “People really let down their inhibitions and snobbery while on board,” he said. “The trip can be a lot of fun for single people… but also for committed couples.”
“The people at Atlantis Events go out of their way to make you feel right at home whether you are old, young, coupled, single — whatever.” — Sean O., an Atlantis Event customer
“What we do here is something very special because we create this environment, this community, where people can be themselves,” Jim said. “It doesn’t matter who you are, you’ll be comfortable on the trip because every type of person is there, and we celebrate those differences.”
“The trip is what you make it out to be,” said E.S. in a Yelp review. “We always find like-minded people. Go out, have a good time, and enjoy.”
“In that short period of time, because people really feel free to be themselves, people really get to know each other,” Jim explained, “and it’s a really authentic experience.”
In the last few decades, the LGBTQ community has really come into its own. Gay rights advocates have changed hearts and minds around the world by showing that no matter who you are, love is love.
Still, some gay singles and couples don’t feel comfortable being out and proud in their daily lives. Maybe they feel self-conscious because they live in a conservative area. Whatever the reason they’re holding back, they can let go of their cares and feel free to be themselves on an Atlantis Events cruise.
Atlantis Events welcomes people of all backgrounds on vacations known for their flirtatious and fun atmosphere. When you book a reservation with Atlantis, you’ll be joining a vibrant gay-friendly community on a getaway like no other.
“I love the fact that we specifically focus on the gay population,” Jim said. “We create this amazing environment and sense of community where we can all celebrate, have fun, learn, explore, and develop lifelong relationships.”
