When I landed on the MenNation website, I could immediately tell the target demographic is gay men. Photos and video clips of muscular tank-top-clad men were front and center. These impossibly attractive guys smiled and beckoned like tempting online dating sirens. MenNation is all about sexual attraction and erotic content, and that’s made clear from the beginning. I joined in my 20s to see if this is a good Grindr alternative for gay guys seeking hot sex. And I’ve got to say, if you’re looking for gay porn and sexting, MenNation has a lot to offer.

MenNation makes a point to advertise to a particular type of gay man — which I like to categorize as the “WeHo Gays.” Good-looking, built, white-presenting men. On the homepage, the moving carousel (of presumably stock photos) only showcases white-presenting men, and the collage section only includes one POC man out of 10 men.

When browsing the landing page, I liked that the footer had clauses for: Dating Safety, Protect Kids, and Report Abuse or Sexually Explicit Ads.

Even with my mind going a million miles thinking about the intentions of this X-rated site, I was impressed that it has protocols in place to ensure the safety and confidentiality of users.

What I expect from MenNation is casual fun. This is a hookup site, after all, so I assume it’ll be racy and fast. But I do hope the types of men I meet are more diverse than those presented on the homepage.

Signing Up in 3 Steps

The registration process isn’t a hassle and doesn’t throw anything too crazy out there. I put in some standard personal information, skipped the photo upload, and verified my age. That was it!

Step 1: Basic Details

To get started, it’s a simple call-to-action. “Your hot encounter awaits near you: I am/We are a: (Man/Couple).

And when it comes to “Looking For,” I have only one option: Men.

I could speed things up by choosing to sign up through Google, which I assumed meant I wouldn’t have to put in my personal details manually. But I chose to go through the process without Google data sharing.

MenNation homepage
Some basic information was required to create a profile.

I identified as a man looking for men. When I clicked next, the site directed me to enter my date of birth, country of origin, and ZIP code.

Then MenNation asked for my email, and I had to create a username and password. After that, it asked for my sexual orientation, body type, ethnicity, and marital status.

All the information so far was required. I don’t love seeing fields for body type without a skip option, but I could select “Prefer Not to Say,” so that was something.

Step 2: Introduce Yourself

The last page required me to create an Introduction Title where I could write a bit about myself.

For the purpose of my review, I wanted to appear open to anything. I make it known on my social media that I am a very single gay man looking for my one(s). So, I simply entered:

“Hey there — let’s connect! Entrepreneur by day, always up for a spontaneous adventure by night. Looking for someone to share in the excitement.”

When it comes to setting up a profile, the biggest tip I give to gay men is: Think of your dating profile like it’s a professional résumé or LinkedIn profile. If you want to impress a man, you’ve got to put thought into your bio

Think about why someone should reply to you and what you have to offer. In the context of MenNation, you’re probably going to want to focus on the physical.

Step 3: Age Verification

Before actually getting to the main page of MenNation, I was required to complete the Age Verification. I had two options: 1) Age Estimation via taking a picture, or 2) an ID verification by uploading an official document.

Age verification options
MenNation assures users that their private data is encrypted and not shown publicly.

I proceeded with the ID verification, which required me to scan the front and back of my USA-issued driver’s license. And then, inexplicably, I was still prompted to perform the Age Estimation scan by taking a tracking photo with my laptop’s camera.

The age verification process took me more than five minutes to complete, but I was glad to see it was there to keep underage members out of the sex site.

Browsing for Free

The first thing I noticed was the free membership had its limits. That’s to be expected on virtually any dating site these days.

On MenNation, the features accessible for free included:

  • The creation of my account
  • Viewing profiles
  • Commenting on livestreams
  • Browsing and posting in the community forum

Everything else was only unlocked after I subscribed to the Gold plan (more on that later).

I could read the messages in my inbox at least.

A user from Nevada messaged me a casual greeting, but when I tried to say a simple hi back, I was hit with a paywall.

All told, I got three messages and seven profile views within my first week online. Which isn’t too bad for not having a profile picture or a really detailed bio up on the site.

MenNation profiles
MenNation lets you sort profiles by online now, new matches, near me, and VIPs.

I do not believe that the free membership is enough when it comes to forming connections on MenNation. It’s more of a free sample like you’d have at an ice cream shop.

The free membership includes browsing profiles and some engagement in public forums. But private messaging is off limits.

If you are actually invested in seeking dates by having private chats, you have to pay a price on MenNation. That’s not the case on other gay dating platforms like Grindr, where anyone with a pulse can slide into your DMs.

I would say MenNation is surprisingly active for a platform that puts a price on chatting, and I like that I can see what’s out there before deciding if it’s worth paying.

What I Saw: Lots of NSFW Profiles

Once I was on the site, I was not surprised by what I saw – lots of private parts. To be specific, nudity was a prominent part of most MenNation profiles. I saw penises, butts, and men pleasuring themselves.

Because of the age verification feature, I knew they were all adults at least.

When I really dove into the website, the first thing that came to my attention was the Online Now section. With one click, I could focus on men in my area (i.e., those within Southern California) who are actively seeking short-term commitments and available right now.

Viewing profiles was an interesting experience. You actually get a good amount of information: from profile bio, what they’re looking for, specific details, kinks/fetishes, and compatibility.

But to be frank, most of the profiles list traits they’re looking for in a sexual partner. It’s a lot of fantasies and explicit stuff. Not something that you would want pulled up on your work computer.

Livestreaming

The livestreaming section featured men (and some women alongside them) in intimate spaces. These livestreams were absolutely X-rated. I saw individuals participating in sexual acts, and I had the option to freely chat to them during the livestream.

MenNation livestreaming
The live webcam section features a lot of private parts.

What surprised me was the fact that women and straight couples have categories in the livestreaming section. MenNation is advertised toward gay men, so this seems confusing to include.

On the right side of the page, there’s a livestream dedicated to featuring pro models for viewer enjoyment. Think OnlyFans, but all men and couples.

Member Activity

Below the livestream section, I could explore a Member Activity section (very similar to your Facebook or Instagram Live Feed) where members post photos and videos.

Unfortunately, most of the feed that I was receiving was of users uploading photos to their profile pictures, with occasional NSFW (not safe for work) photos showing private parts or videos of self-pleasuring or sex acts.

To the left side of the MenNation website, you have your personal page. This is where you can edit your profile, see your interactions (such as who’s viewed you, messages, and those who flirted with you or “top fans”).

Community Blog

The community blog section (it’s called the CEO blog for reasons I don’t understand) is a lot of fun with zero pressure to date. MenNation hypes it up as “our social network for adults.”

It’s where you can explore thousands of feeds, groups, and even shared erotica. I saw a broad range of nudity, and I found out I could set filters that would blur penises and butts if I desired. Which is good because many of the trending posts have lewd acts that I don’t need to see.

The posts often talked of having hobbies and interests, and by clicking around, I discovered specific forums that focus on topics ranging from pets to art to voyeurism and transexuality.

MenNation Forum Screenshot

In the community posts, I saw a lot of female nudity and genitalia, which was surprising, to say the least. I thought this was a m4m website?

On top of that, some heterosexual couples posted about threesomes or swinging. One post invited members to, well, appreciate his wife while he watched. This seemed odd and off-putting for a gay sex site.

The CEO blog is similar to a Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn feed, where you can actively see users posting their thoughts and desires. The only difference is that these are primarily seeking short-term fun in the bedroom.

I saw a lot of married couples, some straight and some gay, and I was shocked by how much content focused on men pleasuring a married woman. Yikes!

Pros & Cons

I liked that the site (and its profiles) were upfront about seeking short-term sex. There was no question mark about what guys here were into or desiring.

MenNation doesn’t pretend to be a dating site for friendship or long-term love.

Pros

  • Sex-positive content and DTF members.
  • Age Verification tools keep underage boys out.
  • Live video is unique and engaging.
  • Nudity filters helped me avoid TMI photos.

Cons

  • Somewhat superficial and overly graphic for my tastes.
  • Straight couples and women featured in some spaces.
  • Free members can’t send any private messages.

I enjoyed the live video element as something unique that most gay dating apps don’t have. It does end up being mostly porn, though, and I found it frustrating that sex and voyeurism seemed to be the only objectives. Call me prudish, but I didn’t like all the penises hanging out everywhere I clicked.

MenNation has a Gold tier that unlocks a lot more features for users — for a price. The paid experience has three subscription options:

Paid members tend to get more action because they’re highlighted in search results, and they’re the only ones who can send messages. That is a pretty big benefit.

Another perk is more advanced search filters by kink and physical attributes.

I would say the pricing is in line with what I’ve seen on other apps, and it’s worth it if you see guys you’d be interested in chatting up and want to take that next step toward actual IRL connections. If you just enjoy lurking, the free membership gives you plenty to see and do without private messaging.

Safety Features

When creating a profile, the website is programmed with CAPTCHA protection, meaning I must authorize that I’m a human being and agree to the terms and conditions of creating a profile with MenNation.

When it comes to safety, my main concerns were about data privacy. Namely, these two things:

  • Creating a profile through Google
  • Despite the protection clauses, scanning a government ID for age verification

I am leery about giving away data like this to MenNation, though I do understand the role it plays in profile verification. MenNation uses a third-party service called Yoti to scan the driver’s license, and it promised not to keep or sell that data. So there’s that.

As I saw on the homepage, MenNation does make a point to keep underage users out and has clear, easy-to-find channels to report abuse or suspicious activity. I didn’t encounter anything I’d call suspicious or threatening.

Everyone was very free with their bodies, but they at least seemed genuine to me.

There were options to report and block profiles that I didn’t have to use. Honestly, I had to hunt to find them. They weren’t as prominently placed as the other action buttons: Flirt, Add Friend, and Fan.

I didn’t see any obvious signs of photo screening (certainly not for sexual content), but that could be taking place behind the scenes.

There was no indicator that showed that a profile I was viewing was either verified or officially registered, and that’s something I would’ve liked to see to have more trust in the community.

Who It Helps

If you are seeking a long-term relationship, this is not the platform for you. But if you just want gay sex or sexual content, MenNation has a lot to offer.

While the marketing on the homepage made me think MenNation would be white male models, the reality was much more diverse and inclusive.

Data Breakdown

DatingAdvice Icon

Gender Ratio: 90% Men

MenNation caters to (no surprise) male adults, and the vast majority of users are guys. There are a slim number of nonbinary people and women in straight relationships.

User Base: Casual Sex Seekers

You're much more likely to find friends with benefits than platonic connections. MenNation members are horny and sex-driven to the max, so whip out your best selfie to get noticed.

Popularity: 780,000 Users

A lot of guys are scrolling through the pics and videos seeking some action, and you can focus on the Online Now list to get immediate chats going.

I took the first 20 guys who were in my area and calculated the mean and median of their ages. The mean came out as 58, and the median came out as 61. So, if you do log into this site, expect an age range of mid-40s to mid-60s.

It brought some form of contentment knowing that there are different types of body types, races, and ages, but of course, the ones being advertised are those who are more good-looking or have the most views or likes.

If you are seeking a platform where you would like to connect to like-minded gay men who are seeking a long-term relationship, this is unfortunately not the platform for you.

A Sex-Forward Place That’s Definitely NSFW

As a 27-year-old man looking for love, I would say my experience was flatline. My gut instinct told me that going into this website. I knew it was primarily going to be focused on short-term fun.

On top of that, I was exposed to a lot of not safe for work content that automatically turned me off. That isn’t the case for everyone, but that’s how I feel.

I would describe MenNation as an adult film or hookup platform where you can showcase and livestream all kinds of X-rated content.

When it comes to the profiles, it’s the same equivalent if you were to compare the profiles to Grindr or Scruff (in this case, some profiles you can tell men have put energy and time into, whilst others are black or have lewd content right off the bat).
