The Short Version: After years of hearing question after question on senior dating as an online dating counselor, Sue decided to start her own service to be a resource for singles over 50. Her website, OnlineSeniorDatingSites.com, provides insight into the mature dating scene with detailed reviews, up-to-the-minute news, and advice for seniors looking for love in the digital age.
Ying (Sue) Su, who started counseling senior daters 10 years ago, used the web to help her gauge how common certain issues and topics were in the mature dating scene.
By participating and sharing polls and forum posts, she noticed a common problem when it came to their approach to online dating. It wasn’t just that they were apprehensive about getting back in the dating game, but they also had to overcome another hurdle thanks to technological advancements in the ever-evolving dating world.
Leveraging her experience, Sue created Online Senior Dating Sites to be a resource for seniors seeking answers to how they can safely and successfully date online.
“I believe that better service truly comes from a better understanding of the person,” said Sue of her decision to focus her website on the two best ways to keep seniors informed — news on sites and tools for mature dating and tips to help make dating easier.
While Online Senior Dating Sites also provides reviews of different dating sites in the over 50 space, the most unique aspects of the website are its news and tips pages.
“We decided to build our site as a way to offer meaningful advice to more single seniors,” Sue said.
The team at Online Senior Dating Sites, she explained, works hard to provide substantial information for its audience.
Online Senior Dating Sites focuses on digesting new aspects of mature dating for its users.
For example, recently Sue’s team delved into the research of new apps targeting seniors and found that there has been a 12% increase in seniors using mobile apps for online dating.
The research also pointed out that using mobile apps actually made them more active than desktop daters, which Online Senior Dating Sites touched on in the article.
Then when it was announced recently that the National Science Foundation (NSF) plans to spend more than $350,000 to conduct a three-year project studying the dating habits of seniors, Online Senior Dating Sites weighed in.
The study is still ongoing, but it aligns perfectly with the goal of Online Senior Dating Sites: to improve the lives of seniors, especially now that more Americans are living longer. And Online Senior Dating Sites plans to cover any updates in the NSF research.
Within the tips section, there are segments centered on helping seniors better understand and further participate in online dating.
“We just want to make things easier for them to get back into the dating scene again,” Sue said.
Most of the tips discuss generally sound online dating advice, such as how to choose a profile picture and what to include in a profile.
There are even topics geared toward etiquette and increasing response rate. For example, the piece “Go Hunting, Don’t Wait to Get ‘Found’” outlines how to search for the best match rather than relying on an algorithm to send profile matches.
This advice section is also where Online Senior Dating debunks myths and highlights scams that target seniors in the online dating space.
Keeping seniors safe online is one of the site’s missions — in addition to helping seniors find someone to spend time with.
In 2012, Sue started to notice she was being asked similar questions as a senior dating site counselor.
Every time she answered them, she thought there had to be a better way to inform the over 50 single population of her answers.
She discussed with a few friends who were also in the industry the idea of cataloging and recording the most difficult aspects of online dating over 50, and in 2014 they launched Online Senior Dating Sites.
Since founding the site, Sue has acted as editor-in-chief and has help from three other friends for site maintenance and content.
“With our resources, we want to help foster an easy, happy, and safe dating experience for senior singles,” said Sue.
It isn’t easy getting back into the dating scene, especially because so much has changed since most seniors’ last first date.
Most people will live beyond 50, and for those who are single during that time, they will need to have a dating resource applicable to the current scene.
Sue and her team at Online Senior Dating Sites plan to continue following and reporting on the latest trends in mature online dating to keep senior singles educated every step of the way.
