Theodor Seuss Geisel took up the pen name Dr. Seuss when he published his first children’s book in 1937. “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street” is a nod to his boyhood home in Springfield, Massachusetts. The story follows a boy dreaming up fantastical things to tell his father when he gets home.
At least 20 publishers rejected the book. Some criticized the lyrical verse as outdated, while others said the book lacked a clear moral message. Dr. Seuss was thinking of burning his manuscript and starting over when his luck changed while walking home (on Madison Avenue, not Mulberry Street). He ran into an old Dartmouth College classmate who worked in publishing and gave Dr. Seuss the chance to get his book into children’s hands.
“That’s one of the reasons I believe in luck,” Dr. Seuss said. “If I had been walking down the other side of Madison Avenue, I’d be in the dry-cleaning business today.”
