The Short Version: Dating coaches take on a serious responsibility in mentoring single people. But who coaches these coaches? In truth, few training programs exist to help dating coaches build their business and master proven techniques. That’s why Hart Coaching Academy has gotten a lot of attention in the industry. Its online lessons train aspiring dating coaches around the world and put them on a path to success. A self-taught dating coach named Christine Hart launched this academy to inform and inspire a new generation of love leaders.
In 2018, the American dating market made $2.5 billion in revenue. A survey of the market found that 400 dating coaches operated within the United States, and that number has only grown larger in the last few years.
Dating coaches are an important resource for singles who want to up their romantic game and improve their relationship skills. Singles who receive guidance from a trained dating coach can see a big difference in all sorts of dating scenarios whether it’s setting up a good dating profile or sharing reliable conversation starters. Dating coaches may even help some clients overcome shyness or build confidence.
What draws a person to the career of dating coaching? Christine Hart of Hart Coaching Academy suggests that aspiring dating coaches are people who love love.
“They’re already the go-to person in their circle of friends. They drop everything to hear about their friends’ dates. They want to know the details — how they felt, where they went, how they dressed. They often help their friends create online profiles,” Christine said.
Hart Coaching Academy recognizes such talent and helps individuals turn it into a full-fledged business. Christine started coaching in 2007, and she brings her experiences as a self-taught pro to the academy.
She told us the idea to start a Hart Coaching Academy came when she found herself fielding questions from colleagues and newcomers in the industry. In 2013, she realized that dating coaches could use a coach of their own, and she could fill that role.
“I knew so much about the industry, and people were coming to me saying, will you mentor me? I want to do what you do,” she told us. “I put together a full curriculum where I teach others everything I know.”
Most would-be coaches who enroll in Hart Coaching Academy are from the United States, though Christine said she has worked with students from around the world. Recent graduates have started practices in Tasmania, France, Germany, and Canada.
“Love is an international thing. Everyone is struggling with their dating life everywhere on the planet,” she said.
About 90% of Christine’s students are women, and students range in age from 22 to 63. Most are entrepreneurs or hard-working professionals who are looking for a new business opportunity. Maybe they’re switching careers, or maybe they want to expand their matchmaking agency to include coaching. Whatever their background, the academy gives them a comprehensive introduction to how dating coaching works.
Some of Christine’s graduates have a specific demographic in mind for their coaching clients. For instance, one 63-year-old graduate works primarily with older widowers and divorced clients. These individuals have been out of the dating scene for a long time and rely on dating coaching to get up to speed.
“As a dating coach, you can target a specific age group, or you can work with people of all ages,” Christine said.
Christine said she designed Hart Coaching Academy to be a practical resource for professional dating coaches. Her lessons deal in real-life scenarios rather than theoretical principles. She shares authentic examples from her coaching practice, so her students can benefit from her experience.
HCA graduate Alaya writes, “I wanted to ensure that whoever I learned from was the best. After working with Christine, I realized that I made the right choice”
A coach named Sharon adds, “I am so excited about the next nine months. As someone mentioned to me Saturday at the Speed Dating Event, ‘your services are needed here in Charlotte’. I want to have a positive impact and empower singles when it comes to dating. This certification class was very informative and allowed me to expound on my vision and elevate it to a higher level.”
Christine aims to help aspiring coaches get their business off the ground.
Students in Hart Coaching Academy learn to be effective coaches and successful business leaders. About 30% of the curriculum deals with marketing tactics and monetary strategy. Christine asks students to consider their branding, website, and title when setting up their business.
Christine’s goal is to give aspiring coaches a baseline for starting or growing their businesses once the 12-week course is complete. Students can take the online course at their own pace and start at any time.
HCA graduate Iona notes, “My favourite part of my training with Hart Coaching Academy would have to be the fundamental coaching skills. Many courses teach you about marketing and skim over the rest with basic coaching theory. Not many actually teach you the techniques, the practical side of coaching. I loved that Christine really broke it down step by step for me. I’m a much better dating and relationships coach because of it.”
Students must complete 12 modules, each of which has a specific focus area, to finish the course.
First, students consider their ideal clients and the differences between coaching and therapy. Next, they learn how to be an effective coach and get results for their clients. Then, they identify ways for finding clients and structuring their business. After that, they discover how to grow their businesses and market themselves online.
The last two weeks involve a practicum during which would-be dating coaches are encouraged to practice their coaching skills using the tools and templates provided in the program. They are also given a template for a business plan to help them outline their goals for the next three, six, and nine months. Christine said she is an enthusiastic mentor and friend to her students throughout the process.
“I am passionate about you being successful as a dating coach. I’m the one responding to your emails and hopping onto the call with you. You’re considering the different options and opportunities, and what I can offer is that personal experience. You’re not just a student assigned a number,” said Christine.
Christine has designed Hart Coaching Academy to teach new dating coaches what she wishes she had known when she started her coaching venture.
“I try to be the person I wish I had when I was building my business. I made a ton of mistakes, but I’ve refined it so my graduates can build their business. I love that feeling of a shared goal. We all love to help people find love,” she told us.
Christine just added additional tools for students, including a completely laid out 8 week date coaching program that graduates can use right away. This is in addition to 30 tools, templates, resources and scripts that are included in the program.
Christine said she is also preparing to launch additional Business Mastery offerings for her graduates, in which she will use her many years of experience helping entrepreneurs in a variety of industries launch a small business from scratch.
Christine offers ongoing support for her graduates. She said she enjoys interacting with individuals on Facebook and wants to use social media to foster more conversations and spread the word about the academy’s successes.
“We want to continue to promote our graduates. That’s an important piece too,” she said.
Dating coaches can have a lot of questions and face challenges when launching their business, and it helps them to have an experienced guide like Christine to offer advice every step of the way.
“I’m mentoring you from your first phone call — from the first day you sign up to graduation and beyond. I want people to know that,” she told us.
