The Short Version: Hypnobabies is a complete childbirth education course that supports expectant mothers and families who choose to naturally prepare for childbirth. It was adapted with permission from Master Hypnotherapist Gerald Kein’s “The Complete Painless Childbirth Program.” Hundreds of thousands of mothers say they’ve used Hypnobabies and had easier and more comfortable births, some even pain-free. Hypnobabies Founder and Director, Kerry Tuschhoff, created the company based on her own experiences. “Having been through two very painful births and attending many births as a doula, my/our mission is to help women achieve this, and we are doing that every day.”
Hypnobabies Founder and Director Kerry Tuschhoff’s life was transformed when she saw a friend give birth with no medication, IV, monitor, episiotomy, or any operative technology. This was in 1988, and, at that time, Kerry didn’t realize people still gave birth naturally.
“She had taken a Bradley Method class to prepare for her birth and told me many things she had learned about the body’s ability to give birth naturally and without intervention. I was fascinated,” she told us.
Kerry’s fascination soon turned into in-depth research because all she had heard about previously was Lamaze. Her mission soon became to serve the world by teaching other women the truth about their own abilities.
“I contacted the group that certifies Bradley instructors, and they agreed to allow me to take the teacher training even though I had not yet given birth, which normally was a prerequisite,” she said.
Kerry took the course, calling it an invaluable education in natural childbirth, and taught her initial class while pregnant with her first baby. Unfortunately, the water birth she had planned went in a different direction, and she ended up having to head to the hospital. Her baby was delivered healthy and safe, but she was traumatized by her birthing experience and the postpartum that followed. Thus began her journey studying various hypnosis techniques.
The day she found Gerald Kein’s “The Complete Painless Childbirth Program” is one she said she’ll always remember because the program helped her piece together all that was missing in her trainings, certifications, and research. She began meeting with pregnant women and asking them what they wanted for a comfortable, natural birth. Their answers gave her the information she needed to create a hypnosis program that women could easily use to eliminate pain and fear surrounding childbirth.
Kerry said she finds steady reassurance in the thousands of phone calls, emails, and online posts from women who have used Hypnobabies. Their personal experiences, reactions, and birth stories have been invaluable as she continues to lead her Hypnobabies team of instructors (also known as Birth Junkies) and expand her program offerings.
Katy, a 35-year-old mother-of-two, wrote that she decided to try Hypnobabies for her pregnancy because she wanted a calm, meditative preparation and birthing experience. She said this is exactly what Hypnobabies helped her create.
“I absolutely LOVED my Hypnobabies exercises during pregnancy, especially the affirmations and fear-clearing tracks,” Katy blogged.
Kerry said she believes wholeheartedly that every time a Hypnobabies mother has a great birth experience, she can also teach other women (and attending birth professionals) how lovely childbirth can be, and these stories can help expectant mothers move forward without fear.
One of the main objectives of Hypnobabies is to help pregnant couples bond with their babies in utero. Kerry said this automatically happens when they’re practicing their Hypnobabies techniques together.
Many expectant women and their partners especially like the idea of being able to incorporate Hypnobabies live classes into their regular pre-baby routines. Mothers find that the classes provide their partners with helpful advice that ensures they feel connected to the entire birthing experience, too.
“It’s not unusual for Birth Partners to be skeptical at first about childbirth hypnosis, or concerned that the expectant mother will simply listen to hypnosis tracks, leaving him/her without a significant role during the baby’s birth,” Kerry said. “Hypnobabies Birth Partners soon learn that their concerns are unfounded when they discover in Class One that hypnosis is a normal state of mind that people experience every day, and that they have a very hands-on role in the process of preparing the mother for an easier, more comfortable birth.”
Katy shared that she was able to incorporate her partner into the Hypnobabies adventure through the use of the audio tracks and workbook exercises designed for couples to do together.
“My husband was 100% on board with me completing the program and did everything I asked, even trying hypnosis himself and working through the guidebook,” she wrote in her blog post.
In addition to receiving a Birth Partners Guide and Birthing Log, couples who decide to experience Hypnobabies together benefit from a hands-on Birth Rehearsal, where they get to practice using hypnosis prompts and gain in-the-moment information on what to do if the mother loses focus or needs extra encouragement.
“Our Birth Partners also get their own hypnosis MP3 to listen to, which helps them become much more calm, relaxed, and confident about pregnancy and childbirth, which is such a gift for them and for our expectant and birthing mothers,” Kerry said.
Hypnobabies is a complete childbirth education course that teaches much more than deep relaxation and breathing for childbirth.
“We teach somnambulistic, medical-grade hypnosis techniques that help lessen and sometimes eliminate discomfort from birthing sensations,” Kerry said. “These are powerful hypno-anesthesia techniques that people use for surgery when they cannot use normal medical anesthesia due to allergies, and they work very well. Fear clearing is also a wonderful part of Hypnobabies during pregnancy, and looking forward to childbirth with happy anticipation instead of dread is a bonus that all expectant mothers deserve.”
Kerry told us Hypnobabies was designed to be versatile to meet the needs of every mother and every family as well as future mothers who use the Fertility Program to help them become pregnant. She feels that when mothers choose Hypnobabies as their childbirth program, it’s best that they “embrace Hypnobabies only” because doing so allows their entire focus to remain on the unique philosophy, techniques, and training.
“We have Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis (live) Classes and two versions of our Home Study Course for families to choose from as well as individual MP3 tracks for issues such as eliminating nausea and a fear of needles, insomnia, starting labor, turning breech babies, twins, VBAC, and many more,” she said.
Hypnobabies is dedicated to helping expectant moms feel more confident in their ability to trust their bodies as well as their minds. Expectant mothers are encouraged to join the Hypnobabies Facebook Moms Support Group and take advantage of the positive, loving community. The group’s private, members-only page also provides information for those who are interested in learning more about family bonding after the delivery as well as child care tips for new moms.
The group is dedicated to answering all Home Study Course questions as well as providing daily Hypno-reminders and tons of information that has proven helpful to past and present Hypnobabies users.
Hypnobabies Home Study Moms and Birth Partners can also call the Hypnobabies office at (714) 894-BABY and speak with the helpful staff. Kerry said everyone in the office is a Certified Hypnobabies Instructor and is always happy to help, encourage, and support people along their journey.
“Our Hypnobabies Instructor Team are all very well-trained Birth Junkies who are dedicated to providing our powerful Hypnobabies tools to the families they teach,” she said. “They also educate their communities on how to become excellent childbirth consumers and exercise their rights to make their own pregnancy, birthing, and baby care decisions.”
Mothers all over the world say Hypnobabies has helped them have a more loving, present birth experience that often includes less pain.
Kerry notes that Hypnobabies students range between 20 and 40 years old and are all over the world, with most giving birth at hospitals. She has found that each woman’s strength and power actually comes from within as she gives birth, and Hypnobabies plays a crucial role in teaching her how to tap into it.
“I’m so proud of these moms for stepping out of the box and choosing a different way to give birth, thereby making their pregnancies so much more enjoyable and their births much easier,” she said. “This is a real gift they give to themselves and their babies, since most of our Hypnobabies are born without drugs in their system and gently, without trauma for their mothers.”
First-time mom Deanna Blankenbiller shared her birth story on the Hypnobabies site. She felt incredibly thankful to have used Hypnobabies for her birthing time and highly recommends it to “anyone who is open to the idea of an easy, comfortable birth.”
She remembers waking up the day she gave birth and telling her husband, Matt, that their baby would be here in the next day or two. They spent the day together watching movies and running errands. By the time Deanna and Matt arrived at the hospital, Deanna was ready to push. As she left the delivery room, she had a few nurses congratulate her and remark on how easy she made birth look.
“I have to say that I was so euphoric after giving birth, not simply for meeting my sweet babe, but for having such an empowered and comfortable birthing experience,” Deanna recalled.
When we asked Kerry what the future holds for Hypnobabies, she told us they’re recording new hypnosis tracks to help people overcome a myriad of problems such as phobias, sugar cravings, and chronic pain relief.
“We are also creating some excellent online courses for parents, birth professionals, first responders, medical personnel, and more. Our Power of Language course series will allow students to understand the power of using specific language for better parenting, childbirth, and medical outcomes, and we’re very excited about it,” she said.
