The Short Version: Treeline Coffee Roasters has created a caffeinated haven in Bozeman, Montana. Its two locations serve specialty coffee sourced from farms around the world and roasted in-house. Couples can stop by for a casual afternoon date and share a flavorful coffee flight while chatting about their tastes and experiences. The coffee shop also has subscription boxes and roaster’s choice beans available for those who want to bring its warm flavors home.

The Treeline Coffee team has been roasting, brewing, and pouring coffee in Montana, since 2013. The quirky coffee roastery has a great reputation in the area, and is sought after as a cozy spot for a study session, lunch break, or first date.

The seeds for the coffee shop were planted over a decade ago when Natalie Van Dusen went on a cross-country motorcycle trip through Colombia. She stopped at a coffee farm where she met local farmer Don Eilas and learned the secrets to growing and roasting the beans for the perfect cup of joe.

Treeline Coffee Roasters has highlighted fresh and bold coffee flavors.

Inspired by her trip, Natalie began roasting coffee in a frozen food truck in San Francisco. This side business eventually expanded to become her full-time career. After a couple years, Natalie moved from the Bay Area to Bozeman, Montana,  tobe closer to the wilderness and fuel outdoor adventures with her freshly roasted coffee. And Treeline Coffee Roasters was born.

Today, Treeline Coffee has two brick-and-mortar coffee shops. One in the Historic Brewery District and one on Main Street in Downtown Bozeman.

Treeline Coffee has taken a farm-to-cup approach to coffee, and its beans are thoughtfully sourced from around the world. The coffee lineup is constantly changing with the seasons, so even regulars can always try something new here.

As Treeline Coffee’s co-founder bean ambassador, Deejay Newell has put a lot of thought into what makes this humble Montana coffee shop special. She told us the roasting room supports a wonderful coffee experience that can mark the start of a fun adventure, a productive day, or even a stimulating date. Coffee lovers can find a lot to love on the menu, and they can sign up for a subscription box to enjoy the flavors at home.

“We are women-owned, and we believe in relationships through and through,” Deejay said. “From our farmers to our suppliers, and all the way down to our customers — we want to highlight every relationship we have in the coffee supply chain.”

The Montana Team Takes Pride in Making Specialty Coffee

Treeline Coffee is grounded by a fun and youthful group of coffee lovers. The team has a bit of a hipster flair, but they make a point to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone, including coffee newbies. Their core philosophy is that there is a flavor of coffee for everyone, and it doesn’t take much knowledge to appreciate these rich flavors.

“We pride ourselves in taking our coffee really seriously — because it’s our job,” Deejay said. “It can come off as pretentious or snobby, but really we just care…a lot.”

The coffee roasters act like one big highly caffeinated family. Sometimes sarcastic, always goofing off, and constantly ready to support each other in times of crisis.

During COVID-19, the coffee shop was thrown for a loop and had to regroup to make sure it could continue pouring coffee while looking out for public health. Deejay said these recent challenges have made the team grow closer than ever, and now they are open at full capacity with a newly expanded online store.

The Treeline Coffee team has maintained close working relationships with its coffee bean farmers.

Over the last few years, Treeline Coffee has blended cosmopolitan vibes with an outdoorsy spirit and become a popular gathering place for socializing in Montana. Whether they’re fueling up for a mountain adventure or treating themselves to a quick date downtown, customers can settle in for a delicious cup of coffee that is the result of a lot of love and devotion behind the scenes.

“We are coffee professionals and want our passion to come through every bag of beans and every cup of coffee you try,” Deejay said. “There is something about sharing a cup of coffee that is truly intimate. So much has gone into cultivating that cup of coffee for you and conversations seem to naturally flow when drinking coffee.”

The Shops Attract Both Tourists & Locals

Treeline Coffee Roasters purchases its coffees seasonally, so its brews are always changing and always fresh. The menu encourages exploration and adventure by offering coffee tasting flights that are perfect for sharing with a friend or a date. The coffee bar also has food made by is partners at The Ugly Onion.

The Downtown location at the Lark Hotel sees a lot of walk-ins who are spending the day shopping or sightseeing and want a quick treat to energize themselves. Many hotel guests start their vacation days at this coffee bar. The most popular drinks at this location are flavored lattes, mocha drinks, or iced beverages.

The Roasting Room on the Northside of Bozeman is more of a hangout where locals spend their time in quiet conversation or study. The neighborhood coffee shop sees a lot of regulars and first dates. “People seek us out at this location,” Deejay said. “They want to try a pour over, or maybe Dan — who is our head barista and local heartthrob — has convinced them to try a cortado.”

Many coffee drinkers enjoy the eclectic and relaxed atmosphere of the Roasting Room.

Treeline welcomes all sorts to its coffee bar. Some customers come in suits, while others are dressed casually, but they share a hankering for warm, enriching bean flavors that are a cut above the typical mass market coffee.

“Definitely the best coffee shop we’ve found in Bozeman,” said Austin B. in a Yelp review of Treeline Coffee Roasters. “They have excellent seating outside and nice, little pop-up greenhouses to sit in to social distance work or do your remote learning… could stay here all day and get your caffeine buzz really going.”

Treeline pours delicious cups of coffee and also sells the beans and equipment to empower coffee lovers to make high-quality coffee at home. The retail coffee beans are sold in mason jars to reduce paper waste. If you bring an empty jar back to Treeline Coffee, the team will swap it out with a fresh one. Bags are available upon request.

Coffeelovers can also find coffee making equipment at the shop, and the well-seasoned team can answer any questions about roasting and brewing coffee at home.

Coffee isn’t the only attraction here. The online store sells swag for outdoor adventures, souvenirs, and gifts. Treeline Coffee has partnered with local jeweler Stacy Townsend to feature Commonform Jewelry. Deejay gushed, “Her stuff is amazing, and I wear a different pair of her earrings every day!”

The Subscription Program Reaches Over 500 People in the U.S.

You don’t have to live in Bozeman to savor the rich flavors of Treeline Coffee’s specialty roasts. The company has a subscription program that ships coffee across the country.

It started as a fun idea among friends. The coffee-loving team put together care packages of their favorite brews to share with about 20 of their friends and family members who didn’t live in Montana. Then demand grew, and the subscription became a full-fledged program with over 500 customers nationwide.

“Hearing some of the stories of our subscribers brings me great joy,” said Deejay.

One couple lived separately for months due to work demands, and the boyfriend signed himself and his girlfriend up for two Treeline Coffee subscriptions as a fun date idea. The couple video chatted while sharing the same coffee in the morning, and it became a nice ritual to keep them connected. The couple are now married and living under the same roof, so they only have need for one subscription.

A custom coffee subscription can be a thoughtful birthday or anniversary gift.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, one subscriber moved to a new location, but forgot to update the address in their Treeline Coffee subscription. So a package arrived at their old address, and its rich aroma intrigued the new resident so much that they asked the owner what was inside. Upon learning it was coffee, that person went online to the Treeline Coffee website and put in an order to see if the taste was as good as the smell.

Rebecca D. and her husband had four samplers of coffee beans delivered to their home in Glendale, California, and they said they were impressed by the flavor experience. It became their go-to gift for coffee-loving friends.

“It’s a great way to try different flavors,” Rebecca said in her review. “The beans are freshly roasted, and we have been sending it to our coffee-loving friends for several occasions.”

Treeline Coffee Awakens Joy in Coffee Lovers

Years of dedication and networking have gone into perfecting the coffee at Treeline Coffee Roasters, and the enriching flavors speak for themselves. This local coffee shop in Montana has grown its reputation one pour at a time. Now the roasters have reached a national audience thanks to its subscription boxes and online store goodies.

Treeline Coffee began with one woman’s passion for roasting coffee beans, and now it’s a well-established brand with an energetic and ambitious team.

“We are working on growing in a way that will allow more people all over Bozeman to experience Treeline,” Deejay said.

If you’re planning a date with a coffee lover, you can make an impressive start by meeting at Treeline Coffee or ordering some of Treeline’s specialty beans. The slow-roasted flavors will have people thirsting for more, and each cup can provide a nice boost of energy during your time together. Treeline Coffee is a laid-back place where regulars and newcomers can make themselves at home.

“We bring in all different people because we promise a really good cup of coffee,” Deejay said. “Whether you’re more of a flavored latte kind of person, drink your coffee black or sip your espresso shot with a side of soda water — we have something for you.”
