The Short Version: There’s nothing like taking a walk in the fresh air to recharge one’s batteries, and going out with a special human or canine can make your journey all the more enjoyable. A few years back, a tech company called WoofTrax set out to expand what a good dog-walking excursion can do by creating a fundraising app where dog walkers earn money for local animal shelters. To date, the Walk for a Dog app has tracked over 30 million walks and supports over 9,000 shelters in the U.S. You can download the app for free on iTunes and Google Play.
I’m lucky enough to have a best friend who supports me through life’s ups and downs. Someone who keeps all my secrets. Someone who never fails to turn my tears into laughter. Someone who’s always over-the-top glad to see me when I get home. My rescue dog, Molly, truly is the best friend I could’ve ever hoped for.
She’s there for me when my friends flake out or my dates are disappointing. She never asks me to explain myself to her, and she doesn’t care how I dress or how much money I make. She will always be my number one fan no matter what.
I don’t know how I can ever repay such loyalty, but I do my best to make sure she knows I love her, too. Mostly that involves giving her plenty of playtime, walks, and attention. Our walks have become a particularly important daily tradition. She can barely sit still once I grab her leash, and we’ve learned to listen to each other as we navigate a route full of squirrels, neighbors, and other exciting distractions.
Molly and I aim to walk about five miles a day, but I’ll admit that sometimes when it’s cold or hot outside, I’m tempted to cut our walks short, and it’s tough to remain motivated after a long day at work. However, I recently found out about a free app called Walk for a Dog by WoofTrax that gives dog owners another good reason to set aside time for man’s best friend.
WoofTrax Inc. donates money to animal shelters and charities based on how many active walkers log into the Walk for a Dog app day after day.
The app offers dog owners a simple pathway to give back to their pups, give back to the community, and stay healthy all at the same time. You can also improve your relationships by planning walks with the people you love. Couples can use this app to spend quality time with each other and their dog(s) in the great outdoors. It’s an all-around win for dog lovers, like myself, who want to show their loyalty to the most loyal creatures on earth.
WoofTrax has thrown its support behind over 9,000 animal shelters and rescues in all 50 states and has empowered thousands of dog lovers to show they care. The Walk for a Dog app has created a caring network of people from all walks of life. These individuals come together to make a difference and help nonprofit organizations raise the funds they need to take care of homeless dogs, cats, and other animals.
The founding principle behind WoofTrax is that people want to do right by their pets and make a difference in the world — they just need an avenue to do it.
“Millions of people are walking their dogs every day,” said Doug Hexter, the Chief Executive Officer of WoofTrax. “And we want to make that more impactful.”
Walk for a Dog app users can be as young as 20 and as old as 70. They live in countries around the world and share a common commitment to the dogs in their lives. The fitness app measures the walk’s time and length and enters the walker into a raffle where they can win money for their favorite shelters or rescue groups.
Some people walk with their spouses or families, while others walk on their own in memory of a lost pet. The Walk for a Dog app doesn’t require users to own a dog — they can add a former pet or virtual dog to their profiles — and people who walk for 10 minutes earn the same chance to win as those who walk an hour or more. You don’t have to be an athlete to take part in Walk for a Dog’s mission.
“Every walk over a quarter mile counts equally on the app,” Doug explained. “We want people to walk as far as they can. It’s not a race. If the best you can do is walk around the block every day, you can still have the same impact as someone walking five miles a day.”
WoofTrax is about more than just tracking your steps — it’s about rewarding dog walkers and giving back to the shelters, rescues, and nonprofits that bring joy to so many individuals and families. The company has designed an innovative system to spread the love and enrich many people’s lives, and it is making a special December fundraising push to ensure everyone has a happy holiday.
Doug told us that WoofTrax has kicked off a fundraising drive to donate over 200,000 meals to animal shelters this holiday season. In the first week of this fundraiser, the app raised enough for 30,000 meals (or 300 bags of dog food) that have already gone out to three dog shelters in Ohio.
If you give a gift to this cause, WoofTrax will send 100 meals to a dog in need.
WoofTrax partners with local shelters and gives them the resources they need to raise money and gain meaningful support from the community. These fundraising efforts rely on the support of everyday people to make something wonderful happen. You and your significant other can pool your efforts to make a difference in the community while spending time together.
“I get excited about doing something that’s never been done before,” Doug said. “Nobody is doing what we’re doing in the health and mobile space.”
WoofTrax users have taken over 30 million walks with their dogs so far, and the Walk for a Dog app is just getting started. It has some exciting plans just around the corner to engage interest and make walking more of a group or family activity.
The WoofTrax team intends to bring a pack mentality to the app by adding more community-driven features, including a leaderboard that will show how far and how often your friends and family members have walked. This leaderboard will reward active walkers and motivate less active people to make more of an effort to take a walk with the ones they care about most.
The Walk for a Dog app has taken steps to support dog walkers and dog lovers worldwide, and its user base is growing rapidly as people spread the word about its positive impact on humans and animals alike.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You made my day,” said Lynn in an email to the WoofTrax team. “I am so happy that such a simple thing as walking my dogs will help other animals. I will continue to walk my dogs and encourage others to participate!!”
Many of WoofTrax’s users have praised the app’s charitable endeavor and joined its mission to improve the quality of life for puppies and dogs everywhere.
“This is amazing. I just want to thank you for doing this!” said Jack from California. “The world needs more companies like you.”
I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have my dog behind me every step of the way. She’s the reason I wake up every morning (literally, she gets up and whines at the crack of dawn), and she constantly inspires me to be a more active, patient, and giving person so I can be more deserving of her devotion.
I’m excited to use WoofTrax’s app to help me prioritize my walks with my number one girl and raise money for other pups at the same time. I definitely appreciate having that one-on-one time with Molly, but I know many couples who see dog walks as their special time together.
Whether you head out on your own or with your significant other, you can support love and companionship by registering your walks on the Walk for a Dog app designed by WoofTrax.
“People love what we’re doing because it helps them get healthy, helps their pets lose weight, and helps nonprofits get donations,” Doug said. “It’s heartening to see how many people are excited about this.”
