Reader Question:

I am a 55-year-old lesbian. I am retiring this year after teaching elementary school for 35 years. I am not a big bar person, but I want someone to share my life with.

How can I meet healthy lesbians?

-Lori (Ohio)

Dr. Wendy Walsh’s Answer:

Dear Lori:

Congrats on the long career. How fun to be so young and retiring already. I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful life ahead, and yes, it will be even better when you find someone to share it with.

As I like to say, misery can do well alone, but to get the full value out of joy, it is better shared.

My suggestion would be to start on an online dating site. Choose one that has a large LGBT community or one that specializes in lesbian dating such as LDATE.com.

Be as authentic as you can in your profile, adding a natural looking photo and honest facts about yourself. Remember, it’s better to be really attractive to 10 people rather than sort of attractive to 100.

Also, I would suggest not dating too far outside of your zip code. Long-distance relationships are filled with more fantasies than reality of day-to-day life. And a day-to-day life partner is easier to bond with if you have plenty of face time.
