Nick spent 20 years in the dating scene before marriage. He has always been the guy friends would come to for advice on relationships, and he developed a knack for giving helpful insights. After college, Nick was a disc jockey for a few years, when the love generation was still alive, so Nick has a lot of relevant experience to draw from when it comes to every aspect of dating, falling in love and screwing things up. He holds Bachelor's degree in humanities and a slew of master’s credits in journalism. Nick is a news junkie and tries to keep up on the latest non-fiction when he has time. He has published two books on how to win at dating and relationships.

Tarzan and Jane had little in common on a lifestyle level, but they still found a way to build a pretty darn good life together. More and more often in this age of the modern, empowered woman, we find ourselves attracted to fabulous ladies with whom we seem to share no common interests. Is it worth the effort to try to make it work? Well, if she is the sweetheart that rings your bell, then damn the torpedoes! Full steam ahead!

Food.

I know, there’s no way you’re giving up your burgers and beer for tofu and alfalfa sprouts. A self-respecting man has to draw the line somewhere. After all, food is the centerpiece of every ethnic culture and family gathering, and it brings comfort and constancy to our lives. Still, small concessions can kindle a great connection.

Enjoying a side plate of her entrée salad with a heavy drizzle of French dressing, an occasional turkey burger, or a protein shake in the morning probably would be good for us. And it might just make her smile, too.

“The key is to always be

willing to compromise.”

Music.

She likes to listen to Vivaldi’s “Water Music” at home, and you like to blast head-banger maniac rock. This can be tough, as it could put you into different rooms if you end up sharing the same home, which is not really conducive to a thriving relationship.

Maybe you can see what she would think about a man cave in the garage or basement for your music and televised sports habits. She probably won’t mind if your ratty old recliner and neon beer sign don’t end up in your joint living room anyway — not to mention the headache music and sports mayhem.

Just make sure to set aside your musical tastes and spend most of your time together. Maybe Adele or Michael Bublé could be a good compromise. There is a lot of music out there, and there will definitely be a style you can agree on.

Hobbies.

You like the great outdoors, camping, fishing and golfing. She likes the art museum, theater, chick flicks and antiques. While you’re dating, this can be awkward because you will want to do things together. If you stay together for the long-term, however, it can actually work out quite well for her to be scouring garage sales and flea markets for antiques while you’re on the links.

Early on, we can live with most anything to have our favorite lady by our side for the day. Maybe you can hop from the art museum to see the robotics exhibit at the science museum, which you might not have taken the time to see on your own. She will compromise on movies too, as even most action/adventure flicks have enough kissing to satisfy your romantic lady for a couple of hours.

The key is to always be willing to compromise and experience new things, whether it’s food, music, or activities. You never know, sushi might become your new favorite food, and you might really enjoy discovering just exactly how Stella lost her groove.
