Buffalo has collected many nicknames since its establishment on Lake Erie in 1801. “The Nickel City” refers to the bison on the back of the Indian Head nickel. “Queen City” means it’s the second most populated city in New York. It earned the reputation as “The City of Good Neighbors” because of its friendly atmosphere.
But I think “City of Light” is my favorite nickname for Buffalo, New York. Romantic cities, including Paris, Las Vegas, Venice, and Perth, share this nickname, but Buffalo earned the title over a century ago.
In 1901, the Pan-American Exposition lit up the city, making it a glowing destination in a time when electricity was a novelty. It became the first US city to install an extensive electric lighting system (powered by Niagara Falls) on the exterior of its buildings. The city’s official flag still recognizes that historical moment with a circle of lightning bolts.
