The city of Chandler started with one man on an 80-acre ranch. Dr. Alexander John Chandler settled in the Arizona Territory in 1891. He was the first veterinary surgeon in the area, and he dreamed of creating a community in the Arizona desert. A decade later, he had 18,000 acres of land to his name. That became the beginnings of a townsite called Chandler Ranch.
When Dr. Chandler died in 1950, approximately 3,800 people lived in his townsite. Today over 260,000 people live in Chandler, which is the 84th most populous city in the US.
