As a leading dating coach, I know online dating is for those who are truly willing to fight to find love. This means if you want to be successful, you need to put the effort and consideration into those messages that you send to other people.

With the right communication, you can land yourself more than just a kind reply from that person of interest — you may just find love that will last you a lifetime.

Unfortunately, I see so many people getting it completely wrong and blowing their chances before they even get started.

So to stop you making the most common online communication mistakes, here is my dating expert advice about how you can improve your communication to find the love that you are looking for. I’ve been coaching singles to find love for more than 10 years now, so I can guarantee this works!

1. Use a good subject line

The subject line, while just an extremely brief title to your message, has the ability to convey a great deal. In fact, it may just be the difference between getting your message read or tossed into the bin.

As a general rule, you should never write sexual or suggestive information in your subject line. That might sound obvious, but I see it all the time.

Many men write bizarre subjects lines thinking that’s going to provoke a reaction. The fact is women are extremely discouraged from replying when faced with a subject line that has crude, sexual overtones. Yes, even the ones with smiley winks at the end to indicate you are teasing.

If you are looking for love, then you need to be in the mindset of someone who wants to fall in love. When you are writing a subject line, it’s much better to be polite and include their name in it. Women are more likely to reply if they see that.

2. Show that you’ve read the person’s profile

Actually taking the time to read a person’s profile can score you big points when it comes to getting a reply to a message that you send out.

Reading a person’s profile and writing something about the profile in your message conveys that you are genuinely interested in the person and who they are.

In addition, reading through the profile can also help you gauge whether someone is right for you, rather than just assuming based on a profile picture.

3. Write a personal message

So many people think it’s OK to just copy and paste the same boring message over and over. They do it to save time and contact as many people as possible.

The reality is it’s painfully obviously to spot and can be extremely irritating. If you’ve taken the time to read their profile, then you’ll be able to write a short message telling them what you have in common and why you’d be a good match.

Trust me, you’ll get a much better success rate once you put the effort in.

4. Check your spelling

You aren’t a child, so don’t write like one.

It is amazing how many people send out poorly written messages with mistakes, text speak and half-finished words.

If you can’t take the time to even write proper words or punctuate your sentences, then why would anyone ever want to talk to you?

It’s just not appropriate, so don’t do it. It’s as simple as that.

First impressions count, so make it a good one.

5. Respond in a timely manner

You may have heard that the appropriate time period before replying to a message is about a day. If a person you like messages you back and you wait a day, chances are they’ll assume you are not really interested.

While you don’t need to message back immediately, you generally should extend the same level of courtesy that you would want shown to you. It’s only polite to reply sooner rather than later, and quite often if you make them wait, they’ll give up and move on to someone more responsive.

In addition, replying quickly can signal that you are truly interested and a person who is worth getting to know better.

Online dating doesn’t need to be a struggle. The above tips are key in helping you find the love that you are looking for by fostering positive and friendly communication. If you take my advice, you can easily increase your chances of finding love in the online dating world.
