When I joined my first dating app in 2015, it was a bit of a niche thing, and there was even some stigma to it. Many guys would explain to me why they were using this “last-ditch effort” way to meet people. Now online dating is the norm.

Today, over 350 million people worldwide have used an app to make friends, find dates, have a fling, and even get in a relationship. Online dating is responsible for 39% of new relationships and 27% of new marriages, according to some recent surveys.

There’s no question that online dating works. The only question is: Which dating app will work for you?

To help modern singles, I went on the hunt for the best dating apps of 2026. Ones that work fast, don’t charge, and keep life interesting with flirty matches popping in your phone every so often. I downloaded the most popular apps and put them to the test, so you can choose from the best of the best.

1. Match

The king of online dating, Match is serious about creating long-term connections. I created a profile here almost a decade ago, and it still gets matches and messages whenever I log back in.

Match.com
  • Relationships: Fun Dates, Serious Relationships
  • Match System: Browse by location, age, interest, and more
  • About the App:

Available via the App Store and Google Play, Match is a fantastic app for dates and relationships. With a user base of 30 million singles, Match is where you’ll have a high chance of success. It’s free to download, create a profile, search for date prospects, and receive compatible matches based on personalized preferences. Free members can also chat with select members and send unlimited likes.

  • Browse Free: View Photos Now

It’s free to download Match, and the app let mutual matches to chat without paying anything. I got quite a few polite messages from mature guys, and I even ended up on a few good first dates.

Pros

Cons

  • Free members can’t see who’s liked them
  • Not geared toward 20-somethings

What makes this app stand out is its maturity. It isn’t superficial swiping. This is truly “dating for grown-ups” as the tagline says. Users actually talk about themselves and can use lifestyle filters and interest tags to make sure they’re meeting the right people.

2. eharmony

When it comes to compatibility, you can definitely trust that eharmony’s app will get the job done. Its personality questionnaire (which is required) has dozens of introspective questions that help the algorithm use psychology to determine which profiles align best.

eharmony
  • Relationships: Long-Term Relationships, Marriages
  • Match System: Get daily match suggestions
  • About the App:

Responsible for 4% of marriages in the U.S., eharmony is among our top picks for relationship-minded heterosexual singles. To become a member, add the app to your phone (iOS or Android) and then take its 29 Dimensions® of Compatibility Matching Quiz. It’s absolutely free to do both these things — as well as receive matches and communicate during other special events.

  • Browse Free: View Photos Now

I like that eharmony offers personality breakdowns and personalized insights into how you would pair with another person. It’s rich with information, and even though private messaging isn’t free, I’d say it’s well worth exploring and seeing who meets your standards.

Pros

  • More mature, slow-paced dating
  • Information-rich profiles
  • Personalized compatibility ratings
  • Send likes for free

Cons

  • Long signup process (over 30 minutes)
  • Must pay for messaging

Since its launch in 2000, eharmony has led to over 2 million relationships worldwide, and the next one could be yours!

3. Fling

This is a fun, flirty space for casual dating, if you couldn’t tell from the name. Fling is a free dating service where nudes are allowed, and messages often get raunchy.

Our Rating About This Rating
4.2/ 5.0
  • Relationships: Casual Dating, Hookups, Friends with Benefits
  • Match System: Search filters
  • Our Experts Say: Fling.com keeps things casual and connects horny adults with video and direct messaging. It doesn’t ask for real names, but it will verify photos as genuine to ensure catfish don’t last long here! Our Review »
  • Browse Free: View Photos Now

Fling.com has my vote as a top dating app for casual dating because it has a lot of free chat options, search tools, and video features to spark instant connections.

Even without a photo, my profile attracted views, likes, and messages. Once I added a pic, the activity exploded. I don’t think men would have that same experience of messages pouring in, but I think with the right opening line, a flirty guy could do quite well here.

Pros

  • Nudes allowed
  • Online games and quick matching
  • Earn credits by being active
  • Video chat rooms

Cons

  • Crowded interface can be confusing
  • Smaller user base
  • Some spaces require credits to access

This spicy dating app has so many bells and whistles…almost too many? The interface can be overwhelming at first, with sections including Match, Search, Online Now, Chat, and Trending. But once you find your groove, it’s all worth it.

4. OurTime

Dating in your 50s and beyond is a completely different experience than dating in your 20s, and OurTime knows that, which is why this app caters to single seniors who want an easy and safe way to meet someone.

OurTime
  • Relationships: Dating and Relationships
  • Match System: Search by age as well as zip, gender, more
  • About the App:

Made just for single seniors, OurTime is one of the most well-known niche dating apps. It’s a fun and straightforward app with simple swiping features. Once two people swipe right on each other, they can communicate. For more match options, visit the ConnectMe and I’m Interested pages.

  • Browse Free: View Photos Now

Mutual matches chat for free on OurTime, so it won’t break the bank to try things out. Our reviewer got 28 likes in just three weeks and reported having a positive experience overall.

Pros

  • Caters to singles over 50
  • Free chatting with mutual matches
  • Active membership base
  • Safety features to keep scammers out

Cons

  • No age verification
  • Some intrusive pop-ups

OurTime lets singles know that it’s never too late to start again, download an app, and meet people who make your golden years truly shine.

5. KinkyPeopleMeet

KinkyPeopleMeet delivers on its name. The profiles have kink tags, the browsing has kink filters, and even the video streaming has fetish-based groups to explore.

Our Rating About This Rating
3.8/ 5.0
  • Relationships: Hookups, Casual Dating, Kinky Chats
  • Match System: Search by age, location, gender, kinks, and appearance
  • Our Experts Say: KinkyPeopleMeet is a sex-driven site where kinksters share their fantasies without shame. It’s a dynamic community for hooking up. And the photo and video galleries offer plenty of titillating inspiration as well. Our Review »
  • Browse Free: View Photos Now
Visit Site »

KinkyPeopleMeet is too X-rated for Google Play or the App Store, but you can download it directly from the site to get the full mobile experience.

Pros

  • Profiles include fetishes and fantasies
  • Video streaming
  • Good for anonymous sexting
  • Nudity filters

Cons

  • Members skew older
  • Messages can be very graphic

I liked how many customized options KinkyPeopleMeet offered. There were many ways to flirt and add to my profile, and I could choose to browse without a photo if I wanted to. I could also go through verification steps to prove my realness online.

6. Ashley Madison

Discreet dating, no waiting. That’s what Ashley Madison is all about. It became famous in the 2000s for embracing affair seekers, but my experience on the app showed me that not everyone here is married. Some are just really private.

Our Rating About This Rating
4.0/ 5.0
  • Relationships: Hookups, Casual Dates, Affairs
  • Match System: Search by age, location, appearance, and more
  • Our Experts Say: With its massive user base and advanced privacy features, Ashley Madison is the #1 site for discreet hookups, dates, or relationships. Our Review »
  • Browse Free: View Photos Now
Visit Site »

Ashley Madison protects user anonymity. It allows members to blur or mask their faces in photos, and they have the option to browse under a username rather than their real name.

Pros

  • Anonymity is baked in
  • Discreet billing and blank app icon
  • Rigorous verification system

Cons

  • Men must pay for credits to chat
  • Not a good space for relationship seekers

With over 91 million members, Ashley Madison is a popular option for keeping it casual and seeing what’s out there (without putting your identity out there).

7. NaughtyCharm

People who just want to hook up deserve a great app, too, and that’s where NaughtyCharm steps in. This is a relatively small, niche app, but I like that it doesn’t ask for much info on signup and gets people browsing ASAP.

NaughtyCharm
  • Relationships: Casual Encounters
  • Match System: Sort profiles by ZIP code, appearance, more
  • About the App:

On NaughtyCharm, everyone is interested in finding sexual encounters with no strings attached. Within a couple of minutes, you can get a profile up for $0. Free membership includes unlimited photos, browsing, and reading chats. NaughtyCharm also has an anti-fraud system to ensure your personal information stays private while you flirt online.

  • Browse Free: View Photos Now

NaughtyCharm keeps things simple and lets individuals set preferences by looks, including eye color, hair color, tattoos, and piercings. Mutual matches aren’t required to send messages, but an upgrade is. The paid plans start at $2.99 for a three-day trial.

Pros

  • Fast signup
  • Free, unlimited profile browsing
  • Can search for matches in any city

Cons

  • Limits on free chats
  • Few rural options

You can cut to the chase with a hookup app like NaughtyCharm as your wingman. It’s not unusual for chats to get flirty, and paid members can even send photos in private chats to turn up the heat.

8. WooPlus

WooPlus has carried the flag of body positivity into the dating world and offered a safe space for full-bodied singles and their admirers. This app attracts BBW and dad-bods galore.

In 2016, WooPlus surpassed 12 million members (and it’s still growing)!

I like that WooPlus celebrates large body types without fetishizing them. Creating a safe environment is clearly a priority for the team, and it shows. Users can choose to verify their photos by taking a quick selfie.

Pros

Cons

  • Smaller user base
  • Only VIP members can use advanced filters

The app offers unique features like profile sneak peeks, 48-hour private chat prompts, and voice messaging.

Body positivity is becoming more mainstream, but that doesn’t mean fat shaming has been eradicated from society. It’s still very much a thing on dating apps. That’s why singles need safe spaces like WooPlus, where their body shape will be celebrated.

9. OkCupid

Since 2004, OkCupid has consistently been rated as one of the best of the best in the dating space, and the same holds true for our list. My favorite thing about the app: it’s 100% free!

OkCupid was the very first dating app I tried. This was back in my 20s when I didn’t have a lot of cash or a lot of confidence that swiping was going to work for me (spoiler alert, it did, and I met my husband on Hinge). I quickly got into the quiz questions and instant messaging.

OkCupid screenshots
OkCupid facilitates over 91 million love connections in the average year.

I found it easy to juggle conversations on the app. I probably chatted with 50 or so guys online. Then one of my pen pals ended up being my boyfriend for a little over a year.

Pros

  • Free communication
  • Fun personality quiz questions
  • Ability to state intentions upfront

Cons

  • Members tend to be young, immature
  • Men outnumber women

OkCupid uses a data-heavy approach to point singles toward the most compatible dates. You can see compatibility ratings and personality tags to guide your match choices. The profiles are information-rich and even note what the person is looking for: casual dating, new friends, serious relationships, etc.

From its earliest days, OkCupid has strived to be inclusive of all daters. It has poly-friendly tools and offers 22 gender and 13 orientation options upon signup.

10. Tinder

The app that perfected swiping, Tinder is fun, free, and it actually works — every week, it’s responsible for over 1.5 million dates! One of those could be you.

I definitely felt intimidated by Tinder at first. Especially as a woman, I imagined myself bombarded by unwanted sext messages. But the mutual matching means you’re in charge and can be the gatekeeper of your DMs, so it is actually very easy to block the creeps.

Tinder app screenshots
Tinder has been phenomenally successful at making quick matches.

Because Tinder is so overpopulated, mostly by young singles, it can be a rather competitive space. Some conversations may fade into nothing simply because you’re both talking to multiple people at once.

Women certainly have an advantage here due to the gender ratio skewing more male, but if you want quick results, few apps can compete with Tinder’s sheer size and activity.

Pros

  • Massive dating pool
  • LGBTQ+ inclusive
  • Quick matchmaking

Cons

  • Can be very superficial
  • Swipe fatigue
  • Fewer older singles

Tinder has created over 100 billion matches since its launch in 2012. That’s a lot of swiping. Its ability to create IRL connections isn’t as strong, but if you’re looking for sheer numbers, then this will get things moving. You’d better have a killer opener to cut through the noise, though.

11. Plenty of Fish

I joined Plenty of Fish expecting it to be a free-for-all. I knew it as a free dating app with over 150 million members, and my impression was that most of them were after casual connections and friendships. It’s a very “let’s chat and see where it goes” vibe.

Plenty of Fish app screenshots
POF offers free messaging without needing to mutual match first.

Within my first week online, my profile had gotten hundreds of views and dozens of messages. The conversation starters ranged from a simple “hi there” to more forward notes like “Hey, what are you looking for and can I get your number?”

Pros

  • Free to send messages
  • Verifies profiles by live selfie
  • Profile details include occupation, second languages, and longest relationship

Cons

  • Paywalls on extended profile information
  • Free members can’t see who’s liked them

With constant innovations, POF makes it incredibly simple to find a date, relationship, friendship, or anything else you might be searching for.

Over 4 million people log into Plenty of Fish every day to chat, flirt, and pick up dates.

12. Grindr

If you’re a man in the LGBTQ+ community, Grindr should be a familiar name to you. Since 2009, it has made a name for itself as the gay man’s go-to wingman.

More than 27 million men in 196 countries use Grindr, so, yeah, I think your odds are pretty good of getting a date here.

Grindr app screenshots
Grindr offers free chatting between men who’ve liked each other’s profiles.

Grindr uses location-based matches to make sure you can always find a hot dude within close proximity. It works best for guys in big cities, of course, but I actually saw a lot of options in rural areas as well after adjusting my search radius a smidge.

Pros

  • Gay matchmaking by location
  • Mutual matches chat for free
  • Discreet app icon and PIN lock

Cons

  • Superficial and sex-driven
  • Pop-up ads (if you’re a free member)
  • Not all search filters are free

It’s considered normal to swap private photos and get a little raunchy in chats right away, so if you’re prudish then you might want to look into more serious dating apps than Grindr.

Popular Dating Apps Available For Free

I’m happy to say all of the 49 apps featured here are free to join, so you can literally take your pick if you’re looking to save that money for the actual date. Keep in mind that some apps have paid upgrades for more visibility, messaging privileges, expanded filters, read receipts, or other features.

For Men | For Women
For Seniors | For LGBTQ | For Relationships | For Hookups | For Couples

For Men

Several dating apps work well for both men and women, but there comes a time when a man needs something that caters exactly to his wants. That’s just what these apps do!

For Women

“Men are from Mars. Women are from Venus” — you’ve heard it before, but it’s so true. Women don’t use dating apps exactly like men do, so this list is for you, ladies.

For Seniors

From losing a spouse to going through a divorce, jumping back into the dating pool can be scary for a single senior. These apps make taking that leap not so scary.

For LGBTQ+

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer singles have more options than ever before, and the number of dating apps on this list proves it.

For Relationships

There’s a misconception that dating apps are just for hooking up, but that’s certainly not the case. See for yourself by trying one (or several!) of the apps below.

For Hookups

Thanks to these awesome apps, users can be honest and upfront about their desires.

For Couples

Just because you’re in a relationship doesn’t mean there’s not an app for you. Get to know each other better, date as a team, or if you’re miles apart, make the distance between you not seem so big.

FAQs: Are Dating Apps Worth Paying For?

It depends. This isn’t a cop out answer. I don’t know your budget. Maybe you can afford to spend $30-40 a month on a premium dating app like eharmony. And if you’re really intent on finding the one and getting married, that could be absolutely worth it for you.

Paying often unlocks great advantages, such as:

  • Unlimited messaging
  • Advanced filtering
  • Seeing profile views or likes
  • Greater visibility
  • Video or voice features
  • Message read receipts

Of these, only messaging is absolutely essential to forming a connection online…but the extra features can be very helpful and tip the scales in your favor if you’re not getting traction as a free member.

However, if you’re on a tight budget and worried that inflation is going to price you out of dinner dates altogether…free dating apps like OkCupid and Fling could be the only option that’s reasonable. And free apps can work, they just take more legwork because you often are missing out on filters or seeing who has liked you.

Which Dating App Has the Highest Success Rate?

The Knot has an annual survey that keeps tabs on how newlyweds are meeting each other (it’s overwhelmingly online nowadays), and its 2024 study found that the highest percentage of newlyweds (36%) said they met on Hinge.

I could also make a case for Match, which has been in the game longer than any dating app and has millions of marriages to its credit. Match has been going strong since 1993, and that’s an impressive feat in an industry where users are constantly changing and have increasingly high standards.

What Are Red Flags on a Dating App?

Even if the dating app has profile verification steps and active moderators, the online world is never airtight against liars and con artists. Especially now that AI is making it easier to create a fake persona.

Some red flags of bad actors include: inconsistent stories, overly flowery and vague language, immediate escalation to intense feelings (aka love bombing), and trying to move the conversation off the app and over to WhatsApp or Yahoo Messenger.

Immediately end a conversation and report the person if they ask for money, loans, favors, or investments of any kind.

Our Methodology

We have clear standards for our dating app reviews. We don’t write about an app that we haven’t tested ourselves first. Our rating system has five criteria points:

  • Ease of Use
  • Popularity
  • Safety
  • Value for Money
  • Features

After swiping and matching on the app, the reviewer (in this case, me) gives a rating out of 5 stars on each point, and we use those ratings to create the overall score.

I’ve been doing this a long time (going on 11 years), so I do tend to favor the legacy apps over the newer flashy ones. Apps that have ridden through swiping, pandemics, and now AI without flagging are truly worthy of user trust as far as I’m concerned.

Choose Wisely & Enjoy Yourself

What I’ve learned in this exploration is that there’s an online dating app for everyone. Literally even for clowns.

No matter what your age, race, orientation, or background, you can create a free dating profile, have a look around, and see what’s out there. Dating apps make it easy to meet people and enjoy a whirlwind romance. Good luck!
